Holyhead Port Authority identifies the Deep-Water Berth and the smaller Inner Harbour Refit Berth as its cruise berths. Visit Wales also confirms an anchorage option, with tender transfers through the marina for vessels beyond the main berth's published size limit. Dock and tender arrivals therefore need different return plans.

Passengers arriving alongside use the port's arranged transfer to the terminal area. The council-created welcoming group identifies the Stena shuttle drop-off and the walking route across the Celtic Gateway bridge into town. Follow the transfer instructions issued for your ship rather than trying to walk along an operational jetty.

Note which arrival you are using before booking a taxi or meeting a private guide: the marina and the Stena shuttle drop-off are different meeting points.

About this port

Holyhead, or Caergybi, is a Welsh port on Holy Island, adjoining Anglesey. It suits a local waterfront visit, a trip to the cliffs at South Stack or an excursion to one of north Wales's castles. The arrival method matters: some ships berth in the port, while others transfer passengers by tender to the marina.

For a few hours ashore, choose the town and one nearby destination. A wide circuit through Anglesey and Eryri needs a longer call and organised transport; distances between stops matter more than the number of attractions on a tour description.

Getting Around

The town centre is accessible on foot once the port transfer has finished. Holyhead railway station is associated with the ferry-terminal area, with services along the north Wales coast. Consult current rail planning before choosing an outing: reaching a station near an attraction may still leave a significant onward transfer.

For South Stack, Beaumaris or a rural destination, a pre-arranged taxi or excursion gives you more control over the return. Confirm the collection point for your arrival method and tell the operator whether your ship is tendering. Reserve the return journey rather than relying on finding an empty vehicle at an outlying attraction.

Things to Do

Enjoy the local waterfront. The promenade around Newry Beach gives tender passengers a natural route towards town. Combine a walk with time in the central streets and lunch if you want to keep the day flexible. The welcome volunteers can point you towards current local visiting options.

Visit South Stack. The RSPB reserve has coastal views, paths and the landmark Ellin's Tower. It is a good choice for scenery and birdwatching, with sightings dependent on season and conditions. Check the reserve's access information and keep clear of cliff edges. Access to a viewpoint should not be confused with entry to the separate lighthouse.

Choose Beaumaris Castle. On Anglesey's eastern side, the castle's concentric defences reward an unrushed visit. It belongs to UNESCO's Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd property, together with the other named monuments in that inscription. Consult Cadw for tickets, opening and accessible routes before arranging transport.

The National Slate Museum at Llanberis was closed for redevelopment when checked on 2026-09-07. Consult Museum Wales before including it in a wider excursion; do not assume the main museum can be visited.

Getting back to your ship

For South Stack, Beaumaris or a rural destination, a pre-arranged taxi or excursion gives you more control over the return. Confirm the collection point for your arrival method and tell the operator whether your ship is tendering. Reserve the return journey rather than relying on finding an empty vehicle at an outlying attraction.

Practical Information

Currency is pound sterling (GBP, £). English and Welsh are used locally. Call 999 or 112 for emergencies.

Take waterproof clothing and shoes suited to slopes and coastal paths. Keep a local plan available if conditions change. Before leaving town, confirm the last shuttle or tender and where it departs: the marina and ferry-terminal area are distinct return points.
