Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: From the tender landing in Newhaven Harbour, use Newhaven tram stop for central Edinburgh, with Princes Street as a sightseeing starting point.

  • Public transport: Edinburgh Trams towards Airport, £2.40 adult one-way, roughly 25 minutes to the city centre; the signposted harbour-to-stop walk takes about 5 minutes.
  • Step-free: the tender uses a floating pontoon; its gangway becomes steep with tidal changes, so landing is only partly accessible for passengers with limited mobility.

Cruise ships anchor off Newhaven and use tenders to bring passengers into the harbour. Follow the ship's tender instructions and note the final boat back before leaving. The boat transfer, waiting and disembarkation all consume time beyond the journey into Edinburgh.

Cruise Scotland places Newhaven around 4.8 km from the city centre. That is a useful guide to the scale of the journey, although the actual distance depends on your destination. A taxi or public transport makes more sense than using much of a short call to walk inland.

Discuss boat steps and assistance with the cruise line if you have limited mobility. A tram's accessible facilities do not remove the need to negotiate the tender transfer first. If weather changes the landing operation, follow the revised instructions from the ship.

About this port

Newhaven is an Edinburgh waterfront arrival, with a small harbour and onward transport into the city. It is separate from the cruise arrival points at Leith, Rosyth and South Queensferry, and from Newhaven in East Sussex. Use the precise port name when arranging an independent tour.

With a few hours ashore, choose between central Edinburgh and a more local visit to the Royal Yacht Britannia at Ocean Terminal. The city offers a concentrated route through the Old and New Towns; staying around Leith gives you more time on the waterfront and less time travelling.

Getting Around

Edinburgh Trams identifies a signposted walk of about five minutes from the harbour to Newhaven tram stop. The route serves Ocean Terminal and continues through Leith towards central stops including St Andrew Square and Princes Street. The operator estimates roughly 25 minutes to the centre (verified 2026-09-08), before waiting and walking at either end.

Buy a ticket before boarding Edinburgh Trams. The operator's 1 September 2026 update confirms that the full route through the city centre, Leith and Newhaven resumed after the summer disruption.

Local buses and taxis provide alternatives; use your ship's stated return point if travelling on its shuttle.

Things to Do

For central Edinburgh, pick one principal attraction and a walk around it. Edinburgh Castle occupies the high ground above the Old Town. Book through the castle's official visitor page if you want to go inside, leaving space between your expected arrival ashore and the entry time.

The Royal Mile and its side lanes offer an introduction to the Old Town. Descending away from the castle is a useful way to explore, but keep track of the distance back to your tram or taxi meeting point. Cobbles, slopes and steps make route choice important.

The Old and New Towns together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The planned streets and squares of the New Town provide a different setting from the tighter lanes along the Old Town ridge. A short circuit around Princes Street and nearby streets can work if you prefer architecture to an indoor visit.

The Royal Yacht Britannia is at Ocean Terminal in Leith. Its operator directs tram users to the Ocean Terminal stop. Check current entry arrangements and access information before visiting; leave enough time to return to Newhaven Harbour afterwards. Combining Britannia with a full castle visit may be too much for a short tender call.

Practical Information

Currency: pounds sterling (£). English is spoken. Emergencies: 999 or 112.

Pack a waterproof layer and footwear with grip. Keep the harbour's name saved on your phone and carry the ship's return instructions. Central Edinburgh can involve substantially more climbing than the waterfront.

Preserve a margin for tender queues on the return, especially if your outing depends on a timed admission or more than one transport connection.
