Ships using Rosyth berth alongside in an industrial port, normally at the North Wall. This is a different arrival from the tender operations at South Queensferry or Newhaven. Follow the ship's instructions for reaching the terminal and your transport meeting point. Passengers cannot walk out of the secure port.

Cruise Forth's local welcome volunteers provide advice in the terminal. Ship excursions normally collect beside the vessel. Some ships also offer a coach transfer to Inverkeithing station. Save the return meeting point before leaving.

There is no public bus service at the port itself, according to Cruise Forth's transport guide. Taxis provide the connection to Inverkeithing railway station or Ferrytoll bus interchange. Neither should be treated as a station immediately outside the gangway.

About this port

Rosyth is a working port in Fife, on the north side of the Firth of Forth. A call advertised as Edinburgh gives you a choice between travelling into the Scottish capital and spending the day closer to the ship in Dunfermline or the Forth villages. Edinburgh requires an onward journey; its historic centre is not a walk from the quay.

For a short call, choose one destination. Dunfermline offers an abbey and an easily explored centre, while Edinburgh rewards a longer visit with the Royal Mile, castle and contrasting Old and New Towns. The approach to Rosyth also gives context to the engineering of the Forth crossings.

Getting Around

For an independent Edinburgh visit, combine a taxi to Inverkeithing with a train to Edinburgh Waverley. ScotRail's route information gives an average 29-minute journey to Waverley. Allow time for the taxi connection at both ends of the rail journey, station access and port security. A direct taxi or organised coach avoids the interchange, although road conditions can change the journey time.

Cruise Forth's welcome team runs a free shuttle to Dunfermline for most transit calls, taking about 15 minutes (checked 2026-09-08). It does not offer this service to passengers beginning or ending their cruise. Take the day's return instructions with you.

Things to Do

  • Edinburgh's historic centre: the Old and New Towns together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A walk along part of the Royal Mile, with time to explore its narrow closes, makes a manageable introduction. Plan for slopes and uneven paving rather than measuring the day only in miles.
  • Edinburgh Castle: choose this as your main interior visit if military and royal history interest you. The castle operator recommends advance booking because tickets can sell out. Select an entry time that leaves room for the transfer from Rosyth.
  • Dunfermline: the abbey and the city's associations with Robert the Bruce and Andrew Carnegie make this a useful alternative to Edinburgh. The Abbey Church welcomes visitors but remains a working church; consult its visitor information before travelling. Historic Environment Scotland lists the adjoining palace as closed (checked 2026-09-07; subject to change).
  • The Forth Bridge: the red railway bridge is a separate UNESCO World Heritage Site. Viewing it from the shore or crossing by train gives a different perspective from your ship; arrange any village visit around confirmed transport.

Getting back to your ship

Practical Information

Use pounds sterling (£); English is spoken. For an emergency, call 999 or 112. Carry a waterproof layer and shoes suitable for historic streets. Keep the ship's contact details and return instructions accessible without relying on mobile reception.

Choose a return train or shuttle that leaves time for the port transfer and boarding checks.
