The Port of London Authority identifies Tower Bridge Upper and George's Stairs Tier among its central river moorings. Tower Bridge Upper is associated with HMS Belfast, upriver of the bridge; George's Stairs Tier lies downstream. Greenwich Ship Tier is a separate mooring farther downriver, covered in the Greenwich guide.
Port-operator documentation describes passenger transfers between central London cruise ships and shore by Thames Clippers catamarans. Plan for a tender or arranged river-boat transfer rather than assuming a direct walk from the ship to a public street; the ship's daily programme names its landing pier.
Once ashore near Tower Bridge, you are already in a central visitor area. A pier on the opposite bank can change the walking route considerably, so use the named pier, river bank, check-in instructions and final return transfer when arranging to meet a guide.
About this port
A cruise call in central London can bring a smaller ship close to Tower Bridge and the historic riverfront. Identify your cruise mooring and the shore landing used by your vessel before planning the day. A central London river call is a different starting point from London Cruise Terminal at Tilbury.
For a short visit near Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, the bridge itself and a riverside walk can fill the day. Choose one interior visit and spend the remaining time nearby.
Getting Around
Walking suits the attractions around Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. Account for a river crossing when the landing and attraction are on opposite banks. Keep a clear meeting point if companions choose different attractions.
Transport for London provides routes using the Underground, buses, DLR and other services. Enter the actual shore landing as the starting point and your attraction as the destination. Choose accessibility options when needed, since nearby stations do not necessarily offer equivalent step-free routes.
Tower Pier's river-bus information is useful for journeys along the Thames. A scheduled public boat is separate from the cruise transfer and cannot substitute for the vessel's final boarding service.
Taxis can be useful for a particular destination, but allow for traffic and tell the driver the correct pier for your return. An organised ship excursion may be simpler when the landing arrangements are unfamiliar.
Things to Do
Visit the Tower of London. The historic fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the White Tower and Crown Jewels among the main reasons to enter. Use Historic Royal Palaces for admission and current visitor information. Allow time inside as well as for entry queues; this is a main activity, not a brief stop between transfers.
Explore Tower Bridge. The visitor attraction includes the elevated walkways and historic engine rooms. Check the bridge operator's visitor page for opening, tickets and accessibility. Distinguish crossing the bridge at street level from entering the attraction.
Consider HMS Belfast. The preserved warship on The Queen's Walk interprets life and service aboard a naval vessel. Some parts involve ladders, so check access before choosing it. The museum's admission arrangements are separate from those of any cruise vessel using nearby moorings.
A walk beside the river and lunch near your landing make useful additions without committing to another cross-city journey. Leave the last part of the visit close to the ship-transfer pier.
Getting back to your ship
Taxis can be useful for a particular destination, but allow for traffic and tell the driver the correct pier for your return. An organised ship excursion may be simpler when the landing arrangements are unfamiliar.
Practical Information
Currency is pound sterling (GBP, £). English is widely spoken. Call 999 or 112 for emergencies.
Keep your ship identification, transfer instructions and port-agent contact available. Use your own vessel's return arrangements even when another cruise ship is nearby. If you book an attraction, leave enough flexibility for the time taken to disembark and reach shore.
