Southampton works as both an embarkation point and a city stop, but the terminal name matters more than a generic “port” address.

Cruise ships berth alongside at five terminals. Visit Southampton gives these access points:
| Terminal | Dock area | Published dock-gate access | | --- | --- | --- | | Ocean | Eastern | Gate 4 | | Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) | Eastern | Gate 4 | | City | Western | Gate 10 or Gate 8 | | Horizon | Western | Gate 10 | | Mayflower | Western | Gate 10 or Gate 20 |
These identify approaches, not permission to use every gate or quay on foot. Follow the ship's terminal-specific pedestrian directions. Give a driver the terminal name and the gate in your cruise instructions, especially for an embarkation drop-off or return pickup.
There is a taxi rank at each terminal; the city's visitor information recommends booking ahead. Ask for an accessible vehicle in advance if needed.
About this port
Southampton works as both an embarkation point and a city stop, but the terminal name matters more than a generic “port” address. For a short call, choose a local museum or Old Town visit and leave time for the return through the docks. London requires a separate journey plan and should not be treated as a casual extra.
Getting Around
Walking can work for a city visit, but the route starts at your actual terminal, not merely the nearest edge of the docks. As a useful comparison, Visit Southampton estimates about 20 minutes from City Terminal to SeaCity Museum; allow additional time for disembarkation, port checks and your walking pace. Do not apply that estimate to the other four terminals.
Southampton Central has direct trains to London Waterloo. The main National Express coach station is on Harbour Parade, separate from the railway station; use the departure point printed on your ticket. For an onward journey, leave a margin between leaving the ship and the booked train or coach.
For a short shore visit, I would stay in Southampton. A train timetable covers only the railway leg of a London outing, leaving both terminal transfers, waiting and travel within London to fit around it.
Things to Do
- Tudor House and Garden: a house museum in the Old Town, with a late-medieval timber-framed frontage and older remains in the garden. The museum says it remains open during conservation work, with scaffolding and possible disruption; check visitor information before committing to it.
- SeaCity Museum: on Havelock Road at the Civic Centre, with displays about Southampton and the Titanic. This provides an indoor focus for a local day.
- Old Town: combine a short look around the historic streets with Tudor House if time allows. Leave the final part of the visit flexible rather than adding a distant excursion.
Getting back to your ship
These identify approaches, not permission to use every gate or quay on foot. Follow the ship's terminal-specific pedestrian directions. Give a driver the terminal name and the gate in your cruise instructions, especially for an embarkation drop-off or return pickup.
Practical Information
The currency is pound sterling (£). Scottish and Northern Irish notes are not legal tender anywhere in the UK; they can still be accepted as payment. Shops choose which payment methods and notes they accept. The earlier description of these notes as legal tender was wrong.
Dial 999 or 112 for emergencies. Notify the cruise line in advance about boarding assistance. Check museum opening information for the visit date.
