Foyle Port identifies three cruise locations: Fort George, Lisahally and Greencastle. Smaller vessels can berth alongside at Fort George or Lisahally; larger calls may anchor and send tenders into Greencastle. The latter is in the Republic of Ireland, across the border from Derry in Northern Ireland.

Lisahally is about 7 miles/11 km from the city. Its cruise shuttle takes 15–20 minutes to the Tourist Information Office. Fort George is a 15-minute promenade walk from the city centre. Greencastle requires a 40-minute coach transfer to Derry; do not apply Lisahally's distance to it.

Record the return meeting point and final transfer time before leaving the arrival area. On a tender call, the final tender deadline takes precedence over the ship's sailing time. The ship handles assistance on its own tender boats.

Visit Derry publishes the three locations as 55°00.2N, 007°19.20W for the city berths; 55°02.5N, 007°15.70W for Lisahally; and 55°11.8N, 006°59.5W for Greencastle.

About this port

Derry–Londonderry rewards a short visit with a concentrated mix of city walls, civic buildings and museums. The historic centre sits above the River Foyle, with streets climbing towards the walled city. A good first visit combines part of the walls with one museum and a stop around the Guildhall.

A cruise sold as Londonderry may arrive close to the city, at the commercial port downstream, or by tender in County Donegal. The ship's daily programme identifies which of these three starting points applies.

Getting Around

Once in the centre, walking works well for a compact itinerary. Start around Guildhall Square, then choose a section of the walls and the streets inside them. Allow for gradients and steps: a short route on a street plan can still involve a climb. Ask visitor staff for a suitable accessible route rather than assuming every wall entrance is step-free.

For journeys beyond the centre, use a prearranged taxi or excursion with a clear return plan. Avoid committing to a distant attraction until the landing point and available shore time are known.

Things to Do

The city walls provide a useful introduction to Derry's geography and history. Walk a manageable section, looking both inward towards the old streets and outward across the surrounding neighbourhoods. A guided walk can add context to the city's religious, political and social history.

The Guildhall is a convenient next stop for its stained glass and interpretation of the Plantation of Ulster. The Tower Museum covers local history and maritime archaeology; check its own visitor information for current exhibitions and admission arrangements. Choose one indoor visit if time is short.

For a different perspective, the Museum of Free Derry in the Bogside addresses civil rights and the Troubles. Approach the subject with time to read the interpretation rather than treating the area simply as a photo stop.

The Giant's Causeway and Causeway Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it belongs in a separately planned coastal excursion. For a few hours ashore, concentrating on Derry leaves more time to understand the city and reduces the pressure of the return journey.

Getting back to your ship

For journeys beyond the centre, use a prearranged taxi or excursion with a clear return plan. Avoid committing to a distant attraction until the landing point and available shore time are known.

Practical Information

Use pounds sterling (£) in Derry. English is spoken. Emergencies: 999 or 112.

Greencastle's location in the Republic of Ireland matters when choosing transport and meeting points; follow the ship's instructions for any cross-border excursion. Keep the port agent's contact details with you.

Wear shoes with grip for stone surfaces and bring a waterproof layer. Check each museum's own page for opening and last admission before committing to an indoor itinerary. Leave time for lunch before your return transfer rather than relying on facilities at the berth.
