Scrabster provides alongside berthing at the redeveloped St Ola Pier. Its outer face was designed for vessels up to 250 metres long. The redevelopment opened in December 2021.

Current harbour guidance identifies the redeveloped St Ola Pier as the cruise berth and names AIDA, Viking and Oceania among its regular alongside visitors. Cruise Scotland also lists an anchorage, but that technical option does not establish routine tender practice. Follow staff directions in the working harbour rather than wandering between the ferry and fishing areas.

Thurso town centre is approximately 3 km from the port in Cruise Scotland's destination information. Scrabster Harbour provides a free coach transfer to Thurso, with local volunteers assisting cruise visitors and identifying the return collection point.

About this port

Scrabster is a working harbour on Scotland's north coast, serving fishing vessels, cruise ships and the ferry route to Orkney. Nearby Thurso is the practical choice for a relaxed independent visit. Travelling farther into Caithness opens up the Castle of Mey and the exposed coast around Dunnet Head, but requires organised transport.

Use the length of your call to choose between town and countryside. A Thurso visit leaves room for a seafront walk, local history and refreshments. For a castle or coastal excursion, arrange the return before leaving the port rather than relying on finding transport at a rural stop.

Getting Around

The town transfer saves the 3 km walk between Scrabster and Thurso. If you prefer to walk, use the staffed port exit and follow the welcome team's directions. Stagecoach X99 also links Scrabster Ferry Gangway with Thurso; the current single fare is capped at £2.

Once in Thurso, a walk linking the centre, seafront and riverside keeps the day straightforward. For the Castle of Mey or Dunnet Head, a pre-arranged taxi, tour or ship excursion gives you control over the return. Ask the driver how much time to leave for travel and boarding before choosing extra stops.

The ferry from Scrabster to Stromness is a separate transport service. Seeing it beside your ship does not make an independent Orkney outing a sensible addition to a short mainland call: you would need to fit both ferry crossings and the cruise return deadline.

Things to Do

  • Thurso on foot: explore the seafront and a section of the riverside, with time for the streets around the centre. VisitScotland identifies Old St Peter's Church and the town's beach as points on a walking visit. Keep an eye on your return transfer time rather than aiming to cover every part of town.
  • Local history: the North Coast Visitor Centre occupies the former town hall and Carnegie Library. Its exhibitions explore Caithness history, from fossils to the nuclear industry at Dounreay. Consult High Life Highland's visitor page for seasonal opening and access information.
  • Castle of Mey: the former home of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother offers a house-and-garden outing. Consult the castle's visitor information for seasonal access and any closures. Reserve the necessary visit and transport before setting out.
  • Dunnet Head: the RSPB reserve occupies the most northerly point of mainland Britain. Sea cliffs and coastal grassland make this a landscape stop even outside the seabird breeding season. Use RSPB's current reserve advice, and stay well back from cliff edges in wind or poor visibility.

Getting back to your ship

The ferry from Scrabster to Stromness is a separate transport service. Seeing it beside your ship does not make an independent Orkney outing a sensible addition to a short mainland call: you would need to fit both ferry crossings and the cruise return deadline.

Practical Information

Currency is pounds sterling (£); English is spoken. Call 999 or 112 in an emergency. The exposed coast calls for warm layers and waterproof clothing, including on an apparently mild day.

Check attraction opening information before booking transport. Wildlife sightings are seasonal and cannot be guaranteed. Keep the ship's contact details and the coach or driver's return instructions with you; the distance back to Scrabster still matters when you are already in Thurso.
