Ships berth alongside at Portland's cruise facilities. The port is an operational commercial estate, and passengers are not permitted to walk freely through it. Use the designated shuttle, an arranged taxi or organised excursion transport to leave the berth.

Portland Port's visitor guidance identifies shuttle stops outside Portland Castle and in Weymouth at the bottom of Spring Road. The port also states that the entrance layout does not allow a public pick-up or drop-off immediately at the gates. A free quayside telephone connects to Weyline Taxis, whose vehicles can collect from the cruise terminal.

Cruise Britain's port information places Weymouth railway station about 5 miles, or 8 km, from Portland Port. This is a useful indication of the transfer scale, not a distance to walk from the ship. Your actual journey depends on the berth, town stop and traffic.

About this port

A cruise visit advertised as Weymouth normally uses Portland Port, rather than Weymouth's town harbour. From the commercial berth, a transfer brings you to the seaside town or to a stop on Portland itself. Weymouth is a good choice for a relaxed beach-and-harbour visit; Portland Castle offers a shorter outing closer to the port.

The surrounding Dorset and East Devon Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, commonly known as the Jurassic Coast. Its designation concerns the exposed coastal geology. Exploring a section of that coast is a separate excursion choice, not something you need to add to every Weymouth visit.

Getting Around

Once in Weymouth, walk between the harbour and nearby town streets, then continue towards the beach and esplanade if time permits. Identify the shuttle's return stop before exploring so that your final walk has a clear destination.

The port gives a 0.8 km walk from its Weymouth shuttle stop to the town centre. Its map leads you through Hope Square and along the old harbour to Town Bridge. The free shuttle is the direct choice from the ship; the seasonal Portland Coaster is an alternative after a visit to Portland Castle.

If meeting family or an independent driver, arrange a public meeting point associated with one of the shuttle stops and follow the port's current instructions. Passengers with mobility needs should contact the port and cruise line in advance to establish suitable transport.

For an excursion farther into Dorset, include the full journey back to the ship in the plan. Do not rely on arriving in Weymouth just before all-aboard: the return transfer and security checks still come afterwards. A local visit allows more freedom to stop for lunch or change direction when the weather turns.

Things to Do

  • Weymouth harbour and beach: the harbour's working waterfront, shops and places to eat sit close to the town's sandy beach. Spend time around the quays before walking to the esplanade. Visit Dorset provides an introduction to both areas.
  • Nothe Fort: the fort offers underground tunnels, a Victorian gun deck and displays reflecting later military use, together with views over the coast. Choose it as your principal interior visit rather than a hurried extra. Check the fort's own website for opening details and accessibility before setting out.
  • Portland Castle: this coastal artillery fort was built for Henry VIII in 1539–40. Its location by the Portland shuttle stop makes it an alternative to travelling into Weymouth. Consult English Heritage and its linked visitor pages before planning an interior visit.
  • Jurassic Coast scenery: choose an organised coastal outing if landscapes are your priority. The World Heritage coast extends well beyond the immediate port area; confirm how much driving and walking your excursion involves. Follow local path notices and keep away from unstable cliff edges and cliff bases.

Getting back to your ship

For an excursion farther into Dorset, include the full journey back to the ship in the plan. Do not rely on arriving in Weymouth just before all-aboard: the return transfer and security checks still come afterwards. A local visit allows more freedom to stop for lunch or change direction when the weather turns.

Practical Information

Currency is pounds sterling (£); English is spoken. Call 999 or 112 for an emergency. Carry rain protection and comfortable footwear, plus sun protection for the open seafront.

Check attraction opening arrangements directly, and obtain the day's last shuttle time before leaving the ship. Keep the ship's contact details with you and allow extra time if your chosen outing depends on several transport connections.
