Orientation, not a walking route

The port authority describes a permanent berth used by large ocean-cruise ships. Follow the passenger route out through the welcome facilities; the surrounding port also handles commercial traffic. The port lists a passenger shuttle serving multiple downtown stops and volunteer ambassadors at the terminal and around town. Establish the stop and return arrangements for your own call before boarding. Dock services.
Use the ambassadors to orient yourself towards the waterfront route or a pre-arranged vehicle. Passengers requiring assistance should discuss the ship's gangway and terminal transfer separately with the cruise line, rather than relying on a general accessibility label.
About this port
Nanaimo is an ocean-cruise stop on Vancouver Island with a dedicated berth at the Assembly Wharf waterfront. Downtown, the museum and the harbour walkway offer an uncomplicated day once you have left the terminal. A trip to Saysutshun, also known as Newcastle Island, adds a separate small-ferry journey and needs more attention to return times. Do not confuse your cruise terminal with the city's BC Ferries terminals or assume a Vancouver-bound ferry is part of your shore visit.
Getting Around
Walking suits the downtown harbour area and lets you combine the museum with a waterfront outing. The cruise passenger shuttle is distinct from the public bus and from transport offered to Hullo ferry passengers.
BC Transit's route 25 Ferry Shuttle serves the Nanaimo Port Authority stop on selected journeys. Its timetable distinguishes those journeys from services ending at Downtown Nanaimo Exchange, so do not assume every route 25 bus reaches your terminal. The adult local single fare is C$2.75 and a DayPASS C$5.50, checked 2026-10-02. Use the current route timetable and fare page if travelling farther across town.
Things to Do
Start with the downtown waterfront and the Bastion, the timber landmark at the end of Bastion Street. The museum's directions distinguish the Bastion from the main Nanaimo Museum, so keep both names clear. Seeing the exterior fits a harbour walk without committing to an organised excursion.
The main museum is a useful indoor choice. Admission is by donation, and the museum describes itself as wheelchair accessible. Its published autumn/winter hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00–16:00, with holiday exceptions; details checked 2026-10-02. The Bastion has separate seasonal and appointment arrangements and is not wheelchair accessible. Its operator says cannon firings are cancelled until further notice, so do not organise your day around older references to a daily firing. Hours and admission and Bastion information.
For more time outdoors, Saysutshun offers a separate island outing. Saysutshun’s operator identifies the passenger ferry departure from Maffeo Sutton Park and the island’s Snuneymuxw cultural connections. Choose this only when the ferry is operating and the return fits comfortably into your call. Do not combine it with a distant road excursion simply because both appear close on a regional map.
Getting back to your ship
Return to the cruise berth at Assembly Wharf, using your ship's terminal instructions. If taking the passenger shuttle, note its actual pickup point and final run; a public bus with “Ferry Shuttle” on its display is a different service. From Saysutshun, allow for the boat back to Maffeo Sutton Park and then the onward journey to the ship. The ferry operator warns that high winds can suspend service; consider that extra vulnerability before choosing the island outing. Work backwards from all-aboard, not from the departure time printed for the vessel, and avoid relying on the last possible ferry connection.
Practical Information
Use Canadian dollars when comparing local prices. Carry a rain layer and shoes suitable for the waterfront; add what you need for an island walk if going to Saysutshun. Download the route and retain the ship's local contact before leaving the terminal. The main museum offers a useful alternative when the weather or ferry arrangements make an island outing unattractive, but its own opening days still govern the choice.
