Arrival & Getting Ashore

Ocean cruise ships dock directly at Port Cabo Rojo. The Dominican government records Norwegian Pearl opening the cruise terminal in 2024, and the Cabo Rojo development organisation describes direct berthing. Passengers leave the pier for the terminal leisure areas or their tour meeting point.

For departures by vehicle, follow your excursion’s instructions from the pier. NCL’s Pedernales outing explicitly starts with a walk to transport before the road journey. A place name on the itinerary does not mean the town itself begins at the gangway.

If walking distances or steps are difficult, arrange the required assistance with the cruise line. NCL’s particular Pedernales beach outing requires passengers to be ambulatory and walk moderate distances; NCL does not recommend it for people using wheelchairs, scooters or other mobility devices. This advice applies to that excursion, not every facility in the port.

About this port

Port Cabo Rojo serves the Pedernales region of the Dominican Republic’s southwest. The cruise complex supplies pools, restaurants and shops, while excursions reach a drier landscape of pale beaches, limestone coast and protected habitats. This is the Dominican port, not the place of the same name in Puerto Rico.

The main decision is how far to travel. A terminal leisure day keeps arrangements simple; Pedernales adds a town visit, while Bahía de las Águilas is a more involved outing into Jaragua National Park. Treat the town and the park as distinct destinations when comparing excursion descriptions.

Getting Around

Choose a port-departing excursion or an independently arranged return transfer for sights beyond the terminal. For an independent trip, give the provider the exact cruise terminal, ship and all-aboard time, and settle the pickup location before leaving the secure area. Book the return leg along with the outward journey.

Pedernales visits involve a drive. As a useful indication of the scale of an organised outing, NCL advertises a four-hour Pedernales scenic drive and beach retreat, including a town-sign stop, beach-club time and the return to the ship; this is the entire excursion, not the driving time (checked 2026-10-02).

Bahía de las Águilas requires a separate access plan. The national tourism board describes arrival by suitable all-terrain vehicle or by boat from Cabo Rojo. Establish whether your booking includes both the road and boat portions, along with any park arrangements.

Things to Do

Bahía de las Águilas: this beach within Jaragua National Park is the strongest choice for a landscape-led day. The tourism board describes an undeveloped shore without shops or restaurants and advises ample sun protection. Take water and any food you need, and make the return boat or vehicle part of the plan from the outset.

Pedernales and a beach stop: an organised drive gives some context beyond the cruise complex and can combine the town with time beside the sea. Read the actual stops carefully: a photograph at the Pedernales sign is different from free time exploring town. Choose an itinerary that matches the experience you want.

Terminal leisure: the Cabo Rojo development organisation lists a pool, lazy river, restaurants and shops. This suits passengers who prefer to remain close to the ship. Establish the admission arrangements for any particular attraction or beach club before buying an additional package.

Getting back to your ship

The vulnerable part of a Bahía de las Águilas outing is the connection back from the beach, potentially followed by a road transfer. Work backwards from the ship’s all-aboard time and agree when you must leave the beach. A Pedernales trip also needs a definite return collection. Once back at Port Cabo Rojo, allow time to pass through the terminal and reach the gangway.

Practical Information

Bring swimwear, a towel, comfortable shoes and sun protection. For remote beach outings, pack your essentials before leaving the ship rather than relying on finding supplies at the destination. Carry a payment method for extras and establish the quoted currency and inclusions before accepting transport or a beach package.

Keep your cruise card, the ship’s required identification and your driver’s details together. Protect them from spray if your excursion uses a small boat.
