The two cruise terminals are Sans Souci, on the east bank, and Don Diego, beside the Colonial City on the west bank. Both belong to the port operated by SANSOUCI; that company name alone does not identify your terminal. Read the terminal name on your ship's instructions before arranging a meeting point.
Ships berth alongside. At Sans Souci, leave through the passenger terminal and use the designated transport area. Don Diego has a separate controlled exit towards the old city. Follow the passenger route given by terminal staff: the wider port also handles cargo. For embarkation, have your driver use the terminal specified on your boarding documents rather than the operator's Don Diego office address.
About this port
Santo Domingo suits a day of streets, squares and museums. The Dominican capital's Colonial City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the cathedral, Calle Las Damas and Plaza España providing the framework for a compact visit. For a first call, concentrate on this district instead of trying to cover the wider capital.
Ocean-going cruise ships enter the Ozama River to dock. Santo Domingo also handles cruise embarkations at Sans Souci. A transit visit and a day joining your cruise need different plans, particularly when luggage and check-in appointments are involved.
Getting Around
Once in the Colonial City, explore on foot between your chosen sights. Parque Colón makes a useful meeting point for the cathedral and Calle El Conde; Plaza España suits the northern part of the historic district. Pick one as your return collection point and save its name before setting off.
For journeys beyond the old city, use a taxi or a prearranged excursion. The tourism board recommends confirming the destination fare before travelling. Uber also operates in Santo Domingo. With an app booking, agree a permitted meeting place; a city service listing does not establish access to your ship's quay.
Things to Do
Make the Colonial City your main outing. Start around Parque Colón and the cathedral, then choose Calle Las Damas and Plaza España for more historic streets and river-facing spaces. Leave room for a café stop rather than treating every monument as a compulsory admission. The district's cobbled surfaces make comfortable shoes useful.
Choose a quieter church visit. Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia has a gilded wooden altarpiece and colonial paintings. The tourism board suggests 30–45 minutes for a visit, a useful alternative to filling the day with larger museums. Dress respectfully and allow worshippers space.
Use Los Tres Ojos for a separate nature excursion. This cave-and-lagoon complex is reached by road. Its entrance staircase and paths below ground make it a different physical undertaking from a town stroll. Arrange transport for the whole outing and allow for the climb back out before your return pickup.
Getting back to your ship
Return to the correct riverbank. A driver taking you to Don Diego when the ship is at Sans Souci creates an additional road journey across the river. Show the terminal name as well as the ship's name, and agree the collection place before leaving the taxi.
Build your return around the ship's all-aboard time, allowing for city traffic, terminal security and the route to the gangway. On an embarkation day, use the cruise line's check-in window; sightseeing plans should fit around it.
Practical Information
Carry Dominican pesos for small purchases and establish whether any quoted taxi price is in pesos or US dollars. Take bottled drinking water, sun protection and the identification your ship requires ashore. Keep the terminal name and port-agent contact available offline.
If you need mobility assistance, arrange it with the ship before disembarking and specify your vehicle requirements when booking transport. Historic paving and attraction staircases deserve separate consideration from assistance at the gangway.
