About this port

Icy Strait Point gives you a choice between an easy visit around a historic salmon cannery and a boat trip in search of humpback whales. The cruise complex is on Chichagof Island, near the town of Hoonah. You can spend your time at its museum, shops and waterfront without going into town. First establish where your ship lands: the two dock areas are connected by a gondola, and some calls use tenders.

Getting Around

The Transporter connects the landing areas. The separate SkyGlider climbs from Wilderness Landing to the mountain above the port. Follow the signs for the connecting gondola when heading across the complex, and check the ticket for any mountain excursion you book.

Independent whale operators use the Excursions Hub. Hoonah Travel Adventures directs passengers from Adventure Landing through the Adventure Center and out of door 2, then along the signed gravel path. From Wilderness Landing, take the Green Transporter, turn left after leaving it and follow the Excursions Hub signs. Use the meeting time on your own booking.

Things to Do

Cannery and waterfront: the port's museum is free, and the historic cannery houses local shops, including Alaska Native-owned businesses. Pair this with a waterfront walk and a meal. It's a flexible choice if you want to stay within the cruise complex and return when it suits you. Follow any trail closures or staff directions.

Whale watching: a booked boat trip gives you time on the water looking for humpbacks. Hoonah Travel Adventures' outing starts at the Excursions Hub, transfers to Hoonah City Harbor and includes transport back to Icy Strait Point. Its advertised duration is three hours, checked 5 November 2026. Agree the port drop-off and return time when booking, allowing for the journey from there to your ship.

Hoonah Travel Adventures also offers its tour customers a return-shuttle pass if they stay in town afterwards. Before leaving the group, have the guide point out its Transportation Hub and give you that day's return arrangements. This is a service included with that operator's tour.

Getting back to your ship

Getting back: after visiting the cannery, walk back along the waterfront to the Adventure Center.

After the whale trip, take the included transfer back to Icy Strait Point, or the agreed customer shuttle if you've stayed in Hoonah. From an Excursions Hub drop-off, follow the signs back towards the Adventure Center.

For Ocean Landing, continue to your ship's dock and gangway. For Wilderness Landing, take the Green Transporter back, then walk along the dock to your ship.

If your transfer uses another port drop-off, tell the driver your ship and landing before getting out. Tender passengers must reach their ship's assigned tender departure point in time for its last boat, then complete the crossing. Count back from the ship's deadline for the road transfer, any gondola queue, the pier walk and boarding.

Practical Information

Bring warm layers and a rain jacket for the boat trip, even when it has a heated cabin. If you use a mobility aid, check the specific outing before booking: Hoonah Travel Adventures' whale trip involves bus and boat steps and cannot carry wheelchairs, walkers or scooters. The port describes accessible boardwalks and pathways, but ship or tender boarding needs a separate discussion with your cruise line.
