Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: The three cruise wharves have different routes to JR Hakodate Station and the nearby Hakodate-ekimae tram stop.

  • Distance: Wakamatsu's Hakodate Cruise Terminal is 210 metres from JR Hakodate Station.
  • Walk: about three minutes between that terminal and the station; a practical short connection. Hakodate-ekimae tram stop is within roughly five minutes of the terminal.
  • Taxi: Minato-cho Wharf to JR Hakodate Station takes about 15 minutes, the city's indicative journey time.
  • Public transport: from Nishi Wharf (E berth), walk about ten minutes to Omachi tram stop, then take a tram towards Hakodate-ekimae; the ride between those stops takes about ten minutes.

Ships dock alongside at these wharves. Hakodate Cruise Terminal is specifically the passenger building at Wakamatsu, with tourist information, a waiting area and toilets. It opens for cruise calls and serves passengers and crew.

Minato-cho is farther from the sightseeing districts. A taxi to the station gives you a starting point for exploring; some calls also have a temporary station shuttle. If yours does, note its return stop and last departure before leaving. The nearby Tsugaru Kaikyo ferry terminal is a separate facility, so don't use it as your cruise pickup point.

About this port

Hakodate offers a seafood breakfast at the Morning Market, red-brick warehouses beside the harbour and a climb through Motomachi's sloping streets. Mount Hakodate adds a view across the city if you have time for the journey up and down. Your berth shapes the start: Wakamatsu is beside the station area, while Minato-cho and Nishi have their own connections into town.

Getting Around

Trams link the station area with Motomachi, the Bay Area, Goryokaku and Yunokawa. Suica and PASMO work on the city trams and Hakodate buses. The bus information kiosk outside JR Hakodate Station can help with routes; taxis also operate from the station.

For the warehouses and Motomachi, Jujigai is a useful tram stop. From there the warehouses are about five minutes away on foot, while the Motomachi churches take about ten to fifteen minutes. Choose the waterfront if you want less climbing: the streets through Motomachi rise into the hills.

Things to Do

  • Morning Market and a seafood meal: the market is beside the station and immediately in front of Wakamatsu Wharf. Try a seafood rice bowl, then decide whether to continue along the waterfront. This makes a manageable first stop, especially when your ship is at Wakamatsu.
  • Bay Area and Motomachi: browse the red-brick warehouses, now used for shops and places to eat, and walk beside the harbour. From Wakamatsu, the warehouses are about fifteen minutes away on foot. Continue uphill towards Motomachi's churches if you'd like a longer neighbourhood walk, or use Jujigai as your tram connection back.
  • Mount Hakodate: from Jujigai, walk about ten minutes to the ropeway's mountain-base station. The gondola ride to the summit observation deck takes three minutes; getting there, queuing and returning take additional time. The ropeway is closed from 20 October to 8 November 2026 inclusive for statutory maintenance, according to the operator's notice (checked 30 October 2026). During the closure, ask at the station's bus kiosk about the Mount Hakodate Climbing Bus and its return service before setting out. Check the operator's notice for any changes before a later visit. An evening view only works if your sailing time allows it.

Getting back to your ship

Getting back: for Wakamatsu, return to JR Hakodate Station or Hakodate-ekimae, walk to Hakodate Cruise Terminal, then continue through the passenger boarding route. For Minato-cho, take a taxi to that named wharf or use your call's arranged return shuttle. For Nishi, take a tram that calls at Omachi, then walk back to Nishi Wharf.

Count back from your ship's all-aboard time, including the last walk and boarding. From the mountain, allow for the journey down before the onward connection; during the ropeway closure, plan the bus descent too; for Minato-cho, leave room for road traffic and finding your return transport. Reaching the station is only the end of the day if your next step is the short Wakamatsu walk.

Practical Information

Keep your ship's wharf name with you, ideally as written in its joining instructions. “Hakodate port” is too broad for a driver or meeting point. At Wakamatsu, the terminal's tourist-information desk is a useful place to settle your route before heading out.
