Arrival & Getting Ashore
Getting to the centre: From Marine Port Kagoshima, reach Wakita for a tram to Tenmonkan-dori; from North Wharf, you can walk into the city centre.
- Walk: North Wharf is a practical starting point for exploring the city centre on foot.
- Public transport: From Wakita tram stop, take line 1 towards Kagoshima-ekimae to Tenmonkan-dori. Return on line 1 towards Taniyama, leaving at Wakita.
Ships berth alongside at Marine Port Kagoshima or North Wharf, also called Kita-futo. Keep that full name with you: the Sakurajima ferry terminal is a separate destination.
At Marine Port, follow your ship's instructions for leaving the terminal. The cruise terminal is about 1,000 metres inside the port entrance, which is about another 1,200 metres from Wakita tram stop and JR Usuki station. Those measurements describe separate stretches of the approach. The Wakita bus stop on National Route 225 is closer to the entrance, but it is a different stop from the tram.
At North Wharf, walking into town is a reasonable choice. Before setting off, identify the exit and the way back to your particular berth.
About this port
Kagoshima offers a shopping day around Tenmonkan or a ferry trip across the bay to Sakurajima, with a seaside footbath near the island's port. Your berth makes a difference. North Wharf is beside the city centre, while Marine Port Kagoshima has a substantial approach before you even reach the tram. Choose your main outing after you've confirmed which terminal your ship uses.
Getting Around
Line 1 serves Wakita, Tenmonkan-dori and Suizokukan-guchi, the stop for the Sakurajima ferry. Travel towards Kagoshima-ekimae for the city and ferry, and towards Taniyama for Wakita. The Wakita timetable has separate weekday, Saturday and Sunday/public-holiday columns.
From Suizokukan-guchi, allow about five minutes on foot to the Kagoshima-side ferry terminal. Pedestrians board on its second floor; on Sakurajima, the passenger entrance is on the third floor. Ferry fares are paid on the Sakurajima side in both directions.
The crossing takes about 15 minutes, or around 20 in some weather and sea conditions, plus time to disembark. Use the ferry operator's visitor page for the timetable link before crossing. Ferry details were checked against the official page captured on 30 October 2026.
Things to Do
- Tenmonkan shopping arcade: Make the arcade your main city stop if you'd like a day with fewer connections. Browse at your own pace, using Tenmonkan-dori as your starting and finishing point. From Marine Port, this keeps the outing on the same tram line as your return. From North Wharf, it fits a day exploring the centre on foot.
- Sakurajima footbath and visitor centre: Walk from Sakurajima ferry terminal to Yogan Nagisa Park for the seaside footbath, with views across Kinko Bay and towards Sakurajima. Bring a small towel. The nearby visitor centre explains the volcano's history and eruptions, making a useful second stop within the same outing. Keep this visit around the ferry-port area if you want to avoid adding an island bus journey. The official footbath page lists opening details and maintenance notices.
Getting back to your ship
Getting back: From Tenmonkan-dori, Marine Port passengers take line 1 towards Taniyama to Wakita, then complete the approach to the port and the final stretch inside it. North Wharf passengers return to their named berth through the city centre.
From Sakurajima, walk back to the island ferry terminal and take the ferry to Kagoshima. For Marine Port, continue to Suizokukan-guchi for line 1 towards Taniyama and leave at Wakita. For North Wharf, return to the cruise berth from the waterfront. Count back from all-aboard time for the island walk, boarding, crossing, disembarkation and your onward journey. A short crossing still leaves several connections between you and the ship.
Practical Information
Save the ship's terminal name and all-aboard time before leaving. Wakita is written 脇田 on local information; Suizokukan-guchi is 水族館口. These are useful names to keep on your phone when planning the tram connection.
If you need wheelchair access on the ferry, ask the operator about a suitable sailing in advance. Its accessible vessels have their own operating times, and boarding arrangements can affect which departure you use.
