Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: From Matsugae, use nearby Oura Kaigan-dori for the city trams; Dejima's quay is on the Mizubenomori Park side of the harbour.

  • Walk: Matsugae has a practical short walking connection with Oura Kaigan-dori. The terminal operator gives about three minutes from that stop to the terminal. Mizubenomori Park is one minute from Medical Center stop or two minutes from Dejima stop; those are stop-to-park timings.

Cruise ships dock alongside at Matsugae, on the international-terminal side, or Dejima, on the park side. The tram stop called Dejima and the Dejima cruise quay are separate destinations. At Dejima, keep your ship's passenger-exit and return directions with you before setting off towards the city.

Matsugae's terminal has visitor information about Nagasaki's history and sights. It makes a useful first stop for choosing a local outing. If you're joining a cruise here, follow your cruise line's check-in instructions for that sailing.

About this port

Nagasaki's overseas trading history runs through its food and sights, from champon and sara-udon to the former Glover residence. A few hours ashore could mean a garden and cathedral visit or lunch and shopping in Hamano-machi. Your berth shapes the day: Matsugae is close to the Minamiyamate sightseeing area, while Dejima is beside Mizubenomori Park. Keep the correct quay in mind when planning your return.

Getting Around

Check the tram's destination and route number before boarding at the rear, unless the driver directs you to the front. Press the stop button before getting off and leave through the front door.

Pay a cash fare into the box on exit, and pay again if you change trams. With a transport IC card, tap both when boarding and when leaving. The change machines accept coins and ¥1,000 notes. Keep smaller money ready, and tell the driver beforehand if you're paying for several people. Sightseeing passes and qualifying IC-card transfers have separate conditions on the tram operator's page.

Things to Do

  • Glover Garden and Oura Cathedral: these neighbouring sights are in Minamiyamate, near Matsugae. Glover Garden includes the former residence of Thomas Blake Glover. Make this your main local visit if you're interested in Nagasaki's overseas connections. If you want to visit both, leave time to look around each place rather than rushing between several districts.
  • Hamano-machi and lunch: choose the shopping district, also called Haman-machi, for a less structured outing. Its arcade gives you a clear destination for browsing. Look for local champon or sara-udon when choosing lunch, and leave room afterwards for the journey back to your particular quay.

Getting back to your ship

Getting back: for Matsugae, return to Oura Kaigan-dori and walk to the international terminal. From Nagasaki Station, take a tram towards Sofukuji, change at Shinchi Chinatown for one towards Ishibashi, and get off at Oura Kaigan-dori. For Dejima, use the passenger approach your ship gave you for the park-side quay.

Count back from all-aboard time, allowing for tram waits, any change and the final walk. Reaching the park or a stop with Dejima in its name doesn't mean you've reached the gangway.

Practical Information

Save your berth name and all-aboard time before leaving. If you need assistance ashore, arrange the gangway and onward journey with your cruise line before the call. A tram connection and a short walk to a terminal or park don't establish an accessible route from your ship.
