Arrival arrangements vary. The municipal harbour lists berths for cruise vessels; a North Holland provincial record also documents ships anchoring off Texel and landing passengers in Oudeschild by tender. Evidence is too thin to establish either method as the normal practice, so the access classification remains mixed and the ship's daily programme determines the arrival method.
For a tender call, note the landing place and last tender time before setting off. Leave time for the return transfer as well as any queue ashore. For an alongside call, save the berth name and follow the designated exit route. The municipal harbour comprises Noorderhaven, Zuiderhaven and Werkhaven, so “the harbour” alone is not a precise return meeting point.
The harbour and Museum Kaap Skil in the village centre form one compact walking outing.
About this port
Oudeschild's harbour and Museum Kaap Skil make a useful starting point for a short visit to Texel. You can stay with the island's maritime history in the village or use a longer call for a walk into the Hoge Berg countryside. The main planning constraint is getting back to the correct quay or tender landing: public transport beyond the village includes minibuses that must be reserved.
Getting Around
For the museum and village, plan a visit on foot from the harbour. Museum Kaap Skil is at Heemskerckstraat 9 in Oudeschild. A local visit is easier to shorten than a trip across the island.
Texelhopper is partly demand-responsive. Fixed bus 28 serves the ferry harbour, Den Burg Centrum and De Koog. The small Texelhopper buses serve other stops, and you must reserve a place: they are not buses you can simply hail when you see one. Reservations are available through the operator's website, app or telephone. The operator requires at least 30 minutes' notice. A single ride costs €3.30 one way (fare checked 2026-09-08).
Book each journey separately and use the stops shown in the reservation. The museum identifies stop 74, Heemskerckstraat, for its location. Reserve a wheelchair space when booking a flexbus if required.
Things to Do
- Museum Kaap Skil: make the village's maritime museum the focus of a short call. Its collections explain Texel's shipping history through finds recovered from the sea. The museum says it is largely accessible to visitors with reduced mobility; that description does not cover your route from the ship.
- Hoge Berg countryside: VVV Texel publishes a walking circuit of about 6.5 km between Oudeschild and Den Burg, through a landscape of turf walls and sheep barns. Allow for reaching the route and returning to the landing in addition to the circuit. VVV explicitly marks it unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs; muddy conditions may require boots.
- Fort de Schans: this restored, star-shaped earthwork near Oudeschild offers an outdoor history walk. VVV dates its construction to around 1574. The Hoge Berg route, rather than the fort itself, carries the page's explicit wheelchair warning.
- Harbour time: a village walk and meal leave room to adapt to a late tender or changing weather. VVV identifies fish restaurants around the harbour. A separate Wadden Sea boat excursion creates another fixed return time, so establish that it fits before booking.
Getting back to your ship
Return details: keep the landing or berth name and the ship's contact instructions accessible offline. Use the ship's final return instructions if they change during the call.
Practical Information
- Currency: euro (€).
- Emergencies: call 112 for urgent police, fire or ambulance assistance.
- Transport bookings: a ticket or payment method does not replace a reservation on a Texelhopper minibus. Register each traveller and each journey.
- Return details: keep the landing or berth name and the ship's contact instructions accessible offline. Use the ship's final return instructions if they change during the call.
