This is a tender port. Vik municipality identifies the landing beside Kristianhus as the quay used for cruise passengers. Ships remain offshore and passengers transfer in smaller boats. The municipal quay beside the town hall serves scheduled boats and leisure craft and should not be confused with the cruise landing.
Cruise Norway places the centre about 200 metres from the tender area. There is no need for a town transfer if you are comfortable walking that distance, although the churches are farther inland. The port factsheet lists no shuttle bus.
Check the last tender time and allow for the outward transfer and return queue. If you have booked a tour, confirm that its meeting point is at the cruise landing. Passengers needing assistance should establish whether the tender and landing arrangements suit them before committing to an independent itinerary.
About this port
Vik lies on the southern shore of the Sognefjord, where the waterfront settlement of Vikøyri opens onto farmland and a valley backed by mountains. The main local sights are two medieval churches, the old shore-dwellers' neighbourhood and the fjord itself. These make a practical alternative to spending most of a short call on a coach.
Vik and Vikøyri name the same village destination and cruise landing. This guide focuses on the churches and the choice of a wider excursion; the companion Vikøyri guide covers a shorter visit around the waterfront. They are two ways to plan the same port call.
Getting Around
Explore Vikøyri on foot, then decide how far to continue inland. Hopperstad and Hove require a longer outing than the waterfront streets; combine them only if the walking route, opening arrangements and your tender deadline fit comfortably.
Skyss provides regional bus and boat journey information. Plan the return as carefully as the outward trip, including any change of service. For a taxi or excursion, agree the collection point and return time in advance.
Voss and Flåm are regional excursions involving additional transport. Vik has no railway station from which to start the Flåm Railway trip directly: a rail outing needs a road or boat connection and a complete return plan.
Things to Do
Visit Hopperstad Stave Church. The church dates from around 1130 and stands above the village in an agricultural landscape. Medieval carving survives, but the building's present exterior also reflects extensive nineteenth-century restoration. The National Trust of Norway explains how architect Peter Andreas Blix used surviving evidence and Borgund Stave Church as a model. Check the operator's visitor page for seasonal access and tours.
Add Hove Stone Church. Dating from around 1170, this small Romanesque church offers a different view of medieval building traditions. Its interior also reflects Blix's restoration work. Do not assume the two churches share opening dates: consult Hove's own visitor information before walking there for an interior visit.
Build a church-focused day. Start with the interior visit whose opening fits your call, then decide whether the second church leaves enough time for the walk back and the tender queue. If conditions or opening arrangements change, use the waterfront as a shorter alternative. The companion Vikøyri guide describes that local option.
Choose one wider landscape outing. Excursions can head towards Vangsnes, Arnafjord or the mountain road over Vikafjellet. A visit to the Nærøyfjord requires a separate journey: its UNESCO designation belongs to the West Norwegian Fjords World Heritage property, and should not be applied generally to every village on the Sognefjord. Confirm transport and duration before adding any of these to a short call.
Getting back to your ship
Voss and Flåm are regional excursions involving additional transport. Vik has no railway station from which to start the Flåm Railway trip directly: a rail outing needs a road or boat connection and a complete return plan.
Practical Information
The currency is the Norwegian krone (NOK). Norwegian is the local language and English is widely understood. Emergency numbers are 110 fire, 112 police and 113 ambulance.
Wear shoes suitable for wet paths and carry a waterproof layer. Use marked routes through farmland, leave livestock alone and respect church services. Museum, church and café opening can vary with the season; a planned interior visit deserves a check before you leave the ship.
