Orientation, not a walking route

The port information sheet identifies Sørsidekaiene as the designated cruise quay area and puts the town centre about 200 metres from the pier. This is a dock port: the same sheet does not offer anchorage and tender operations. Stornespiren and Prestebrygga are names used for the central southern waterfront.
The main central berths have direct walking access to town. Leave by the signed passenger exit, then orient yourself towards Brosundet and the streets around the harbour. The distance from your gangway will depend on the ship's position along the quay.
Do not assume every quay gate is a public exit. Before leaving, note the return entrance and all-aboard time. Passengers who need assistance should confirm the gangway arrangement with the ship.
About this port
Ålesund rewards a few hours on foot. Its harbour, ornate buildings and hilltop views are close enough to combine without a long excursion. The town's Art Nouveau character developed during reconstruction after the fire of 1904; looking closely at the doors, windows and rooflines is part of the visit.
Choose the town centre and a museum for an easy day, or add Aksla if the weather is clear. The Atlantic Sea Park is another substantial option, but involves travelling beyond the centre. A call at Ålesund does not automatically include Geirangerfjord, and a separate journey there needs its own carefully checked return arrangements.
Getting Around
Walking works well for the harbour and central museums. Aksla requires a climb unless you take road transport. Taxis can reach the hill, while local buses provide options for destinations farther out; use FRAM to check routes, stops and tickets for your travel date.
For the aquarium, take FRAM bus 1 to Tuenesvegen, with a further walk of roughly 10–15 minutes. The adult one-zone ticket costs kr50 one way in the FRAM app; buying on the bus adds kr20 per one-way journey (prices checked 2026-09-08). This is transport out to the aquarium, separate from the walk into the centre. Check its visitor information before choosing the bus, especially if walking is difficult.
For a short visit, pick either the aquarium or a more leisurely central route. Leave room for queues and the walk back through the port.
Things to Do
Explore Brosundet and the Art Nouveau streets. Start with the waterfront, then turn into the streets around Apotekergata. This gives a useful introduction to the town without committing to an excursion. Look up at the varied façades, while keeping doorways and narrow pavements clear.
Visit Jugendstilsenteret and KUBE. The Art Nouveau Centre occupies the former Swan Pharmacy, completed in 1907; KUBE, in the neighbouring former bank, presents art exhibitions. Together they add context to the buildings outside. The museum's website gives current opening information and access details. Some historic interiors have thresholds and narrow passages.
Go up Aksla. The route from Byparken has 418 steps. Pause as needed and turn back if the steps are wet or the climb is uncomfortable. A taxi offers an alternative approach by road. The view takes in the town's island setting and the surrounding mountains; cloud can obscure it.
Choose Atlanterhavsparken for marine life. The aquarium and science centre suit visitors who prefer a focused attraction. Check the operator's programme for presentations and allow for both transport legs.
Getting back to your ship
For a short visit, pick either the aquarium or a more leisurely central route. Leave room for queues and the walk back through the port.
Practical Information
Norwegian kroner (NOK) are used; cards are widely accepted. Norwegian is spoken locally and English is widely understood. Emergency numbers: fire 110, police 112, ambulance 113.
Carry a waterproof layer and shoes with grip, particularly for Aksla. Check museum and aquarium opening details for your visit rather than assuming they follow the ship's hours. For a relaxed finish, return to the central waterfront for a café stop before entering the port.
