Ships berth alongside. Sandnes Havn identifies Somaneset as its cargo and cruise facility and also has a separate pier in the inner harbour. These locations require different plans. Somaneset's address is Strandgata 151; it should not be confused with the central waterfront where sightseeing boats depart.

Use the berth name in your ship’s daily programme and the permitted pedestrian exit. From the inner-harbour pier, the central streets are closer than from Somaneset.

If using your ship’s shuttle, keep its return meeting point. Taxi collections need to use the authorised port pickup point.

About this port

Sandnes is a town at the head of Gandsfjord with an industrial history, a science museum and a centre that rewards an unhurried walk. It also offers a rail connection to Stavanger. Decide early whether to spend your call in Sandnes or travel to its neighbour: both are workable ideas, but combining them leaves less time at each.

Vitenfabrikken is a strong focus for a family visit or a rainy day. A walk through the shopping streets and waterfront suits passengers who prefer a less structured outing.

Getting Around

Within central Sandnes, walking links the waterfront, shopping streets and museum. Vitenfabrikken gives a distance of about 550 metres from both the bus station and railway station to its entrance at Storgata 28.

For Stavanger, use Sandnes sentrum railway station. Bane NOR confirms services towards Stavanger and links to journey planning and ticket purchase. Check Kolumbus for local buses and travel planning, including the journey between your port exit and town. Allow for the return from Sandnes sentrum to your berth as well as the train journey itself.

Things to Do

Explore Vitenfabrikken. The Science Factory combines interactive science with Sandnes and regional industrial history. Its subjects include astronomy, energy and mathematics, alongside the businesses that shaped the town. The planetarium has a separate programme, so check what is showing before choosing an admission time. The museum reports lift access to its floors and accessible toilets; its practical information helps with planning specific access needs.

Walk through the centre. Langgata and the neighbouring streets provide shopping and café stops. Combine them with the harbour frontage rather than expecting a large concentration of monuments. The region's tourism board also describes an industrial heritage walk beginning at Somaneset. That full route is a longer outing; select only a section if time is limited.

Make Stavanger your main excursion. Travel there for the old wooden streets, harbour and museums, then return with a clear margin before sailing. Check the day's rail service before committing, including any replacement transport. A stop in another city is easiest when the return journey is settled first.

Consider a fjord outing. Sightseeing boats can offer a different perspective on Lysefjord. Rødne identifies Rådhuskaien in the centre as its departure point and operates only on selected dates. Confirm availability, the meeting point, full duration and return connection before making this your main outing. Seeing the cliffs from the water and hiking to a summit have very different time requirements.

Getting back to your ship

For Stavanger, use Sandnes sentrum railway station. Bane NOR confirms services towards Stavanger and links to journey planning and ticket purchase. Check Kolumbus for local buses and travel planning, including the journey between your port exit and town. Allow for the return from Sandnes sentrum to your berth as well as the train journey itself.

Practical Information

The currency is the Norwegian krone (NOK). Norwegian is spoken locally and English is widely understood. Call 110 for fire, 112 for police or 113 for an ambulance.

Carry a waterproof layer and save the berth name on your phone. Use the museum's current opening information rather than assuming it is open every day. Local holiday transport and shop arrangements may differ from weekdays.
