The Port of Bergen lists cruise facilities at Festningskaien, Bontelabo, Skolten North, Skolten South and Jekteviken. Cruise ships normally dock alongside at these quays.
Festningskaien, Bontelabo and Skolten are on the side of the harbour nearest Bryggen. Once outside the port's controlled area, they lend themselves to exploring the historic waterfront on foot. The walk depends on the actual berth and permitted exit; follow the signed passenger route.
Jekteviken is a separate terminal area on the Dokken side of the port. The port authority has documented passengers walking into the centre from ships docked there. Rødne gives about 20 minutes on foot from Dokken Cruise Ship Terminal to Zachariasbryggen by the Fish Market; follow the passenger route out of the controlled port area.
Passengers needing mobility assistance should arrange the ship's gangway assistance and an appropriate transfer before disembarking. Historic streets and wharf passages can involve uneven surfaces.
About this port
Bergen offers enough within its central waterfront for a rewarding visit without a long excursion. Bryggen, the historic trading quarter on the eastern side of Vågen, is the main starting point. From there, choose a museum, a walk through the adjoining streets or the Fløibanen funicular for a view over the city.
Bergen has several cruise quays. Establish your berth and transfer arrangements before booking a timed attraction.
Getting Around
Central Bergen is well suited to walking between the waterfront, Bryggen and nearby museums. Decide on one principal attraction and leave room for the streets between them. On a wet day, a museum-first plan can be more useful than waiting for an uncertain view.
Skyss operates the city buses and Light Rail; bus 4 also provides the short ride from Bontelabo to Torget described above.
Fløibanen has its own operator information for tickets, opening times and service notices. Allow for queues as well as the journey itself. If walking down from the hill, check the route and conditions before leaving the upper station.
Things to Do
Explore Bryggen. UNESCO recognises the historic wharf as a record of Bergen's role in the Hanseatic trading network. The timber buildings have been rebuilt after fires using the traditional layout. Walk beyond the familiar waterfront façades into the public passages, while respecting businesses and any areas closed for maintenance.
Visit Bryggens Museum. The museum uses archaeological discoveries to explain medieval Bergen, including the everyday life behind its trading waterfront. It is a useful complement to walking through Bryggen because it adds context to what survives above ground. Consult the museum's visitor information for current exhibitions and access arrangements.
Check the Hanseatic Museum's current venue. The operator identifies the historic Finnegården building as closed for restoration and directs visitors to Schøtstuene. Use the museum's current visitor information to plan your visit to Schøtstuene, and check it again before assuming Finnegården has reopened.
Take Fløibanen if visibility is worthwhile. The funicular reaches the Fløyen viewpoint, with walking routes around the upper area. Check the weather before buying a ticket and allow time for the descent. A clear view is a reason to go; a heavily clouded summit may make the museums a better use of a short call.
Leave time for the harbour streets. A walk around the central waterfront and market area can fit between larger visits.
Getting back to your ship
Carry a waterproof layer and shoes suitable for wet paving. Keep the berth name and any shuttle return point on your phone or on paper; “the cruise terminal” is not specific enough in a city with several cruise quays.
Practical Information
Norway uses Norwegian kroner (NOK), and cards are widely accepted. Norwegian is the local language, with English widely understood in tourism. Consult the museums, Fløibanen and Skyss directly for changing hours, fares and service notices.
Carry a waterproof layer and shoes suitable for wet paving. Keep the berth name and any shuttle return point on your phone or on paper; “the cruise terminal” is not specific enough in a city with several cruise quays.
Call 110 for fire, 112 for police or 113 for an ambulance in an emergency. Use the ship's local contact for assistance with a delayed return.
