The cruise harbour is in Bukta beside the airport. Terminalkaia is the established cruise berth; the port also provides the Nordlys tender/service quay, and its published cruise information describes anchorage arrangements. Depending on the vessel and call, passengers may walk down a gangway or transfer ashore by tender.

Alta Havn's 2026 traffic list shows regular calls at Terminalkaia and Marinekaia as well as ships assigned to anchor, so mixed access remains appropriate. If tendering, keep additional time for the return boat.

Bus 42 serves the centre from the airport and Betongveien, both about 600 metres from the harbour. It is a public bus rather than a museum transfer; Alta Museum is a separate stop west of the centre.

About this port

Alta's main attractions are spread across several districts, so this is a port where choosing transport early helps. The rock art at Hjemmeluft gives a window into prehistoric life around the fjord, while the Northern Lights Cathedral is the principal landmark in the modern centre.

For a few hours ashore, make Alta Museum the main visit and add the cathedral if connections allow. A winter call offers a different experience: snow affects the outdoor carvings, and northern-lights excursions require darkness as well as suitable conditions. Neither the aurora nor a particular outdoor activity can be guaranteed.

Getting Around

Alta Museum and the cathedral should be treated as separate stops. For an independent visit, check Snelandia for buses and plan both directions before leaving the ship. Compare this with the ship's excursion or a prearranged taxi, especially on a short call.

The museum's bus stop is called Alta Museum. Its visitor guide gives a walk of about 150 metres to the entrance in summer, with a longer approach in winter when snow blocks the short route. Ask about the most suitable entrance if you use a wheelchair or have difficulty with steps.

Do not rely on finding a waiting taxi at each attraction. If taking one out of the centre, agree the return arrangement. Walking around the modern centre is straightforward once there, but walking between all three areas would use much of a brief port visit.

Things to Do

Give the rock art time. UNESCO inscribed the Rock Art of Alta in 1985. The carvings record human and animal activity over a long prehistoric period; the museum's interpretation makes the images more meaningful than a hurried photograph. Use the designated paths and avoid touching or walking on carved surfaces.

Keep an indoor alternative. Alta Museum explains that the outdoor rock-art route closes in winter, while its indoor exhibition includes original carved boulders. In the snow-free season, check the museum's path-work notice before setting out. It describes separate east and west routes that return via the museum when their connecting path is closed.

See the Northern Lights Cathedral. The church stands at the end of the central pedestrian street and was consecrated in 2013. Its distinctive exterior can be appreciated on a town walk. Interior visits depend on opening arrangements and church use; check Visit Alta's information.

Choose an outdoor excursion deliberately. Regional offerings include river outings, husky activities and experiences led by Sámi hosts. Select an activity appropriate to the season and the time ashore. Ask how much travel is involved, what clothing is supplied and what happens if conditions change.

Getting back to your ship

Do not rely on finding a waiting taxi at each attraction. If taking one out of the centre, agree the return arrangement. Walking around the modern centre is straightforward once there, but walking between all three areas would use much of a brief port visit.

Practical Information

Currency is Norwegian kroner (NOK), with cards widely accepted. Norwegian is used locally, alongside the region's Sámi heritage; English is widely understood in visitor services. Emergencies: fire 110, police 112, ambulance 113.

Bring layers and practical footwear even if your plan is mainly indoors. In winter, allow extra time for slippery surfaces. Keep the ship's contact details with you and make the return to the harbour part of the plan from the outset.
