Overview

An itinerary entry for the Azores needs both an island name and a port name before you can plan transport. This Portuguese archipelago has nine islands; even two berths in the same town can produce quite different journeys ashore. Start with the terminal named by your cruise line, then choose an outing on that island.

The regional tourism board's cruise directory includes more ports than the four named in the archived index. The examples below explain the most useful arrival distinctions; they are not an exhaustive list or a promise that a particular ship can berth.

Ports in This Region

  • Terceira: Praia da Vitória or Angra do Heroísmo. These are separate ports. For Praia da Vitória, the official directory gives 3 km to Praia town and 20 km to Angra. Visiting Angra's UNESCO-listed central zone therefore needs a road transfer when your ship calls at Praia. A short call is better spent choosing one town than trying to visit both.
  • São Miguel: Ponta Delgada. The directory distinguishes the Portas do Mar cruise terminal, listed as 200 m from downtown, from the commercial port, listed as 2 km away. Those figures describe the facilities, rather than your exact gangway-to-centre walk. Establish the berth and permitted exit before deciding to walk.
  • Faial: Horta. The same distinction matters here: the cruise terminal is listed as 500 m from downtown and the commercial pier as 2 km away. A town visit has fewer transport dependencies than an excursion elsewhere on Faial; agree the return arrangements before leaving the harbour area.
  • Flores: check the actual landing. The official cruise directory describes Lajes das Flores, on the south-east coast. Its quay information must not be used to describe Santa Cruz das Flores. If your itinerary names Santa Cruz, obtain the landing and transfer details from the cruise line before booking an independent pickup.

Use the ship's all-aboard instructions when setting a return time. Do not add an independent inter-island connection to a short call without a separately workable return plan.
