APRAM identifies Cais Sul, a 290 m quay at Porto Santo, for cruise and other ships. This supports alongside docking for suitable vessels; it does not mean every ship on an itinerary can use the quay. Confirm your own ship's berth or any alternative arrival arrangement with the cruise line.

Visit Madeira locates the marina within the commercial port and gives 3 km to the town centre. This is useful evidence that the harbour is not the central Vila Baleira pier, though it is not an exact walking measurement from every cruise gangway.

If you arrange a pickup, specify the commercial harbour and your ship, then agree a return meeting point. Passengers needing assistance should have the gangway arrangements checked individually.

About this port

For a Porto Santo call, plan around Vila Baleira and a section of the island's long sandy beach. The harbour is a separate transfer from town. A museum visit or an arranged inland outing can add variety, but a beach-and-town plan has fewer moving parts than trying to cover the whole island.

Getting Around

For a short call, use Vila Baleira as your destination and keep the harbour return as a separate part of the plan. Choose a manageable stretch of beach rather than trying to walk its full length.

For viewpoints elsewhere on the island, agree the route and return time with a driver or excursion organiser before leaving. The published Moinho timetable includes a Cidade–Porto de Abrigo working timed at about 25 minutes; it is arranged around ferry operations, so use its dated timetable rather than assuming a regular frequency.

A ferry trip to Madeira is a substantial additional journey. Porto Santo Line states that the crossing to Funchal takes about 2 hours 15 minutes each way (checked 2026-09-07). That is roughly four and a half hours sailing before check-in, waiting and sightseeing. Our recommendation for an ordinary short port call is to stay on Porto Santo.

Things to Do

  • Vila Baleira and Fontinha Beach: Visit Madeira identifies Fontinha as a central beach beside Cais Velho, the old pier. This is a useful town-and-beach combination, and a different location from the commercial harbour used for arrival.
  • Casa Colombo: The regional cultural authority's museum at Travessa da Sacristia explores Porto Santo and Portuguese maritime expansion. The house's association with Christopher Columbus is traditional, not a verified claim that the present building is his unchanged home. Official pages disagree about weekly closing days, so confirm directly before planning around entry.
  • An inland viewpoint: Visit Madeira lists Pico do Castelo viewpoint, above 400 m, among the island's inland options. Treat it as an arranged excursion if time and transport allow, rather than a casual extension of a beach walk.

The beach stretches about 9 km, but its length says nothing about swimming conditions on the day. Follow local flags and any lifeguard instructions.

Getting back to your ship

For viewpoints elsewhere on the island, agree the route and return time with a driver or excursion organiser before leaving. The published Moinho timetable includes a Cidade–Porto de Abrigo working timed at about 25 minutes; it is arranged around ferry operations, so use its dated timetable rather than assuming a regular frequency.

Practical Information

Portugal uses the euro (€); the emergency number is 112.

Keep your ship's contact and return instructions available offline. Bring water and sun protection for a beach outing, and agree a recognisable collection point if the return involves a vehicle.

Frequently asked

How far is Porto Santo port from Vila Baleira? About 3 km from the commercial harbour to Vila Baleira town centre.

How long is the bus from Porto Santo harbour to Vila Baleira? About 25 minutes on the published Moinho Cidade–Porto de Abrigo working.

Do cruise ships dock or tender at Porto Santo? They normally dock. APRAM identifies the 290 m Cais Sul for cruise and other ships, although a ship's dimensions still determine whether it can use the quay.
