Arrival & Getting Ashore
Getting to the centre: From Pontinha passenger terminal, the public-bus destination is Zona Velha by the cable-car station at Almirante Reis garden.
- Walk: realistic using APRAM's designated pedestrian areas out of Pontinha, then the lower-city waterfront; keep clear of port vehicle lanes and heavy machinery.
- Public transport: Horários do Funchal 105, Linha Eco Cidade, links Pontinha with Zona Velha on selected journeys; €2.05 one way for an adult municipal ticket bought aboard. Use the departures marked as serving Terminal Porto do Funchal (Pontinha), rather than an ordinary Lido journey.

Orientation, not a walking route

APRAM, Madeira's port authority, identifies Cais Norte, Cais 2, Cais 3 and Cais 8 as cruise berths. Docking is the normal arrangement described by that infrastructure, but your assigned quay determines the exit and distance into town. The passenger terminal's address is on Molhe da Pontinha, the harbour breakwater; do not treat a map marker on the city waterfront as your gangway.
APRAM publishes pedestrian access rules for Pontinha. Follow the designated walking areas and stay out of vehicle lanes: the authority specifically warns about heavy machinery. Security restrictions can override general public access. Save the designated return gate with your ship’s instructions.
Visit Madeira describes the port as close to central Funchal by road. A taxi or ship-arranged transfer can reduce the walk along the quay. If you need step-free access, arrange assistance for your actual gangway and vehicle boarding.
About this port
Funchal offers two different kinds of port day: a visit to the city near the waterfront, or an ascent to Monte. For a short call, the central gardens and old town give you more control over your return. Add Monte only after allowing for both journeys, any boarding queues and the trip back through the port.
Getting Around
The cable-car operator describes the lower city as level around its base station at Almirante Reis garden, beside the old town. That makes a waterfront outing different from climbing into Funchal's hillside neighbourhoods. Choose your route accordingly rather than assuming all city walks have the same gradient.
For Monte, the Funchal cable car links the lower station with the upper station at Largo das Babosas. Use its official visitor information when planning a timed attraction.
If you descend by the Monte sledges, arrange the remaining journey separately: they finish at Livramento, not at the waterfront or cruise terminal. Taking the cable car both ways is the simpler return plan if you want to retrace your route.
Things to Do
- Central gardens and waterfront: Combine the Municipal Garden with a waterfront walk. Santa Catarina Park offers another garden stop with views over the bay. Choose one garden if time ashore is limited.
- Old town: Explore around Almirante Reis and the nearby Mercado dos Lavradores or São Tiago Fort area. This also lets you see the lower cable-car station before deciding whether there is enough time to go up.
- Monte: Make this the main outing if you want the cable-car journey and a garden visit. Monte Palace Tropical Garden is one option; check its own admission arrangements and allow time beyond the cable-car ride. The sledges are a separate activity with a different finishing point.
These are alternative planning choices, not a timed itinerary. Leave the last part of your call free for the return to the assigned quay.
Getting back to your ship
If you descend by the Monte sledges, arrange the remaining journey separately: they finish at Livramento, not at the waterfront or cruise terminal. Taking the cable car both ways is the simpler return plan if you want to retrace your route.
Practical Information
Portugal uses the euro (€). The emergency number is 112.
Keep your ship's return instructions and port contact available offline. Book any timed attraction admissions before setting out. Footwear suitable for steps and uneven paving is useful if you add hillside streets to the waterfront route.
