The main Lisbon Cruise Terminal at Jardim do Tabaco operates together with the Santa Apolónia Passenger Terminal. The port authority describes an alongside cruise quay serving the two buildings, and the operator identifies Santa Apolónia as a complementary passenger facility. This is a docking arrival; the operator states that ship tendering is not allowed at its facility.
Use the terminal and gate in your cruise documents. Santa Apolónia railway and Metro stations are useful landmarks for that end of the quay, but a berth farther along the waterfront adds a walk through the terminal area.
If your documents specify Rocha Conde de Óbidos or Alcântara, obtain the transfer instructions for that berth. The operator's 2026 supplementary-services tariff still names Rocha and Alcântara; that does not establish how often they are used or which ships are assigned there. Do not apply Santa Apolónia walking directions to them.
About this port
For a short Lisbon call, choose between the central waterfront and a separate trip west to Belém. The main cruise facilities are beside the historic city, making a local walk practical once you have cleared the terminal. The exact berth and exit still matter: a point marked “Lisbon port” is not precise enough for a return pickup.
Getting Around
For the centre: the port authority identifies Santa Apolónia on the Metro's Blue Line as a public-transport connection. A walk towards Praça do Comércio is another option from the main cruise-terminal area. Decide whether you want the riverfront or Alfama's hillside streets: Alfama includes stairways, so it is a different walking proposition.
For Belém: Carris route 15E lists Praça do Comércio, Cais do Sodré, Cais Rocha, Alcântara and Mosteiro dos Jerónimos among its stops. Check the operator's route PDF and service notices for your travel date and boarding direction. A stop named for a quay does not establish a direct path from your gangway.
Tickets: Metro de Lisboa lists the following fares, checked 2026-09-08:
| Option | Published fare | Useful distinction | | --- | --- | --- | | Metro with a contactless bank card | €1.92 per journey | Each traveller needs their own card or device; this payment is for the Metro journey. | | Metro using zapping credit | €1.72 per journey | Prepaid credit on a travel card; changing operators incurs another fare. | | Carris/Metro 24-hour ticket | €7.25 | Covers both networks for 24 hours from first validation. |
The navegante occasional card can hold tickets or zapping credit; merely having the card does not determine which fare applies. Compare the journeys you intend to make before buying a day ticket.
Things to Do
- Keep to the central waterfront: Praça do Comércio, also called Terreiro do Paço, faces the river and provides access to the Rua Augusta arch and Lisbon Story Centre. A square-and-streets outing is easy to shorten; choose at most one interior if time is tight.
- Explore Alfama: Choose a small loop through the streets above the terminal rather than making the castle a compulsory endpoint. Stairs and changes in level make a map's short distance misleading for anyone who needs step-free travel.
- Make Belém the main excursion: The Tower of Belém and Jerónimos Monastery form a single UNESCO World Heritage property. Allow for a return transfer as well as admission. Check each monument's own visitor conditions before leaving; an exterior visit is a workable fallback if the interior you want is unavailable.
For a short call, pick the central area or Belém. Set the return time before you leave the port, preserving a margin for traffic, boarding and terminal controls.
Getting back to your ship
Ask your ship about the actual gangway and transfer if you need assistance. Carry the terminal name and return meeting point offline. Check individual businesses directly rather than relying on a general Sunday or lunchtime closure rule.
Practical Information
Portugal uses the euro (€); call 112 for emergencies. The port authority lists toilets, tourist information, taxis and free Wi-Fi at the main terminal.
