Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: From the South Mole's Porto Cruise Terminal, head out into Matosinhos for the metro to Trindade station in central Porto.

  • Walk: not realistic to central Porto during a short call; long suburban route. Matosinhos is the local walking option.
  • Public transport: Metro do Porto Line A from Matosinhos Sul towards Estádio do Dragão to Trindade; Andante Z3, €1.85 one way, about 28 minutes aboard. Buy or load an Andante card at the station; the reusable card is charged separately on first purchase.

APDL publishes passenger information for both terminals:

  • Porto Cruise Terminal: on the South Mole in Matosinhos, with an alongside cruise quay.
  • North Cruise Terminal: at Dock 1 North in Leça da Palmeira, also with an alongside quay. It should not be dismissed as disused simply because it is older.

At either berth, follow the port's designated passenger exit into Matosinhos or Leça da Palmeira. APDL lists public buses outside the port and says taxis may enter to collect at the terminals. Use the terminal pickup point for a booked taxi.

Keep the terminal name for the return journey. A driver told only “Porto cruise port” may not know which side of the harbour you need.

About this port

A Leixões call gives you a choice between staying in Matosinhos and travelling into Porto. Confirm the terminal before choosing transport: the south-mole Porto Cruise Terminal and the North Cruise Terminal are on different sides of the harbour. Porto's historic centre is a separate city outing, not a walk straight out of either terminal.

Getting Around

Metro: Line A links Matosinhos with Trindade and Bolhão in Porto. The official network map shows Matosinhos Sul on the southern side and Mercado towards the northern end of Matosinhos; choose the station that fits your port exit. Senhor de Matosinhos is the line's terminus, not automatically the nearest station to every berth.

For São Bento, change at Trindade to southbound Line D, or finish on foot from a central Line A stop. São Bento is not on Line A. Validate the Andante card before boarding and again when changing lines. Allow separately for walking to the station, waiting and the port’s return procedure.

Direct transfer: A taxi or a ship's Porto transfer, if offered, removes the station walk but remains dependent on road traffic and its drop-off point. Agree the return destination and timing before leaving. Do not let a transfer estimate use up the whole margin before all-aboard.

Things to Do

  • Stay in Matosinhos: The beach has a promenade and nearby fish restaurants. This is a useful shorter outing when the time available does not justify two city transfers. The tourism board notes strong surf here; a promenade visit need not include swimming.
  • Choose a central Porto walk: São Bento's station vestibule has painted tile panels depicting Portuguese history and transport. Pair it with the cathedral area or a walk towards the river, leaving time to regain your return transport.
  • Make the Douro waterfront the destination: Ribeira and the Luís I Bridge offer a different view of the city. The UNESCO listing covers Porto's historic centre, the bridge and Serra do Pilar Monastery. The bridge connects Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia; it does not connect Leixões to Ribeira. Its upper deck is at the cathedral/Jardim do Morro level, so establish which deck your route uses before arranging a meeting point.

Choose one Porto circuit rather than trying to add a wine-country excursion to a short call.

Getting back to your ship

Direct transfer: A taxi or a ship's Porto transfer, if offered, removes the station walk but remains dependent on road traffic and its drop-off point. Agree the return destination and timing before leaving. Do not let a transfer estimate use up the whole margin before all-aboard.

Practical Information

Portugal uses the euro (€); the emergency number is 112. APDL lists toilets, tourist information and Wi-Fi at both passenger terminals.

Docking does not establish step-free access for an individual passenger. Check the gangway, any port bus and the city route with your cruise line if stairs or long walks are a concern.
