Ships dock in the commercial harbour. The port authority confirmed on 22 May 2026 that the new passenger walkway and boarding bridge at Muelle de Ribera II were operating for ferries and cruise ships. Muelle de Levante and Ribera II both serve cruise ships, so use the quay and exit route named in the ship's programme.

The authority describes easy pedestrian access to the centre from the cruise berths. Follow the marked passenger route and the instructions at the gangway rather than taking a shortcut through working areas. The waterfront park, Parque Nicolás Salmerón, provides a useful orientation point outside the port.

About this port

Almería offers enough for a full call without leaving the city: a fortress on the hillside, a cathedral in the old centre and a waterfront shaped by the working port. For a short visit, make the choice between climbing to the Alcazaba and following an easier route through the lower streets.

A trip to Granada takes the day in a different direction. It needs a carefully arranged transfer and attraction bookings; do not treat it as an extra after exploring Almería.

Getting Around

The lower old town can be explored on foot, but the Alcazaba stands on a hill above it. A vehicle transfer can shorten the approach; it does not remove the slopes and changes of level within the monument. Check access arrangements with the operator if stairs are a difficulty.

For a straightforward day, go to your main attraction first, then work back towards the waterfront with time for lunch. A taxi or organised excursion is more useful for destinations outside the city. Do not rely on an outward intercity bus or train without checking the full return journey against the ship's deadline.

Things to Do

Visit the Alcazaba. The fortified complex occupies a hill overlooking the city and bay. Its sequence of enclosures makes it a substantial visit rather than a quick viewpoint. Read the monument's official visitor page before going: seasonal opening patterns, exceptional closures and guided-visit arrangements can affect the plan. Take water and wear shoes suitable for uneven ground.

Explore around the cathedral. The Cathedral of the Incarnation gives a lower-town walk a clear destination. Combine its surroundings with the old streets and a café stop, allowing extra time if you wish to enter. Check visitor access separately from religious services.

Look at the Cable Inglés. This former mineral-loading structure stands at the waterfront by Las Almadrabillas. It is a useful way to understand the industrial side of Almería and can form part of a lower-level outing. Consult its visitor information before making entry the main purpose of your walk.

Choose Granada as a separate excursion. If the Alhambra is your priority, use a programme that explicitly includes the correct admission and return transport. The drive, entrance appointment and journey back leave much less flexibility than a local visit.

Getting back to your ship

Do not rely on an outward intercity bus or train without checking the full return journey against the ship's deadline.

Practical Information

The currency is the euro (€), Spanish is the main language and the emergency number is 112.

Carry sun protection and allow breaks during uphill walking. Keep the ship's return time separately from any excursion meeting time. For attractions, consult the operator's current opening and admission information.
