Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: Smeerenburg has no settlement centre; the relevant shore destination is the whaling-station archaeology inside the mapped landing area at 79°43.9′N, 10°59.7′E.

  • Walk: guided beach-area walking is realistic on firm ground; when snow remains or the ground is wet, AECO directs visitors to stay on the beach and avoid the muddy polygonal ground.

Smeerenburg is a confirmed mapped tourist landing area in Nordvest-Spitsbergen National Park. The current regulation's Appendix 6 marks both the permitted landing and the area in which visitors may remain. The previous guide's suggestion that access was merely likely has been resolved. Access is by the ship's small boats to the shore. The Norwegian Polar Institute describes several possible beach approaches, chosen according to wind. Wet ground or walruses on the beach can force the expedition leader to change the approach or keep the visit afloat.

About this port

At Smeerenburg, the visible remains of whale-oil processing are the focus of a visit. This seventeenth-century Dutch whaling base occupies a headland on Amsterdamøya. Much of the settlement has disappeared beneath sand; the surviving oven remains need careful interpretation and protection. Expect a guided visit to an archaeological landscape rather than a reconstructed village.

Getting Around

Follow the guide within the authorised area. Avoid the oven remains and wet tundra even when the distance to a feature looks short. A footprint or a shortcut can damage material that is difficult to recognise. There is no independent town transfer to arrange; the same expedition team controls the return to the ship.

Things to Do

Ask the guide to explain how the surviving oven rings relate to rendering oil from whale blubber. Looking across the low remains is more useful than expecting intact buildings. The surrounding water provides the geographical context for a shore-based whaling operation.

Our recommendation is to use the available landing time for this compact historical visit. If the beach is unsuitable, accept a change of site or viewing from the boat; the wildlife and ground conditions take precedence over completing a walk.

Getting back to your ship

Follow the guide within the authorised area. Avoid the oven remains and wet tundra even when the distance to a feature looks short. A footprint or a shortcut can damage material that is difficult to recognise. There is no independent town transfer to arrange; the same expedition team controls the return to the ship.

Practical Information

  • Ship size: vessels entering the national park's marine area may carry no more than 200 passengers; this is a vessel limit, not permission for a larger ship to land people in batches. Regulation checked 2026-09-08.
  • Heritage: do not stand on the ovens or remove bricks, fragments or other objects.
  • Preparation: follow the expedition team's footwear and small-boat boarding instructions. Take essential personal items with you and use the ship's facilities before departure.
