Port Longyear directs larger cruise vessels to Bykaia, while Turistkaia serves smaller passenger vessels. Tenderkaia is used when Bykaia has no space or a ship does not meet its docking criteria. The normal passenger arrival is therefore alongside, with tendering as a contingency. Port Longyear cruise guidance and Tenderkaia

Bykaia is a controlled port area with a staffed security gate. Use the route given by the ship and carry its required identification. The ship's daily programme identifies the return point if the call uses Tenderkaia instead.

The official visitor map marks the harbour footpath into town. Where the route lacks pavement, walk on the left side of the road as the map advises. The airport bus is not a public port-to-centre service.

About this port

Longyearbyen offers a town visit with museums, shops and local transport, but the arrival point matters. The harbour handles both alongside calls and ships anchored in Adventfjorden. For a short stop, our recommendation is to secure the transfer into town, visit Svalbard Museum and leave time for the centre before returning to the correct quay.

Getting Around

Visit Svalbard describes the centre as walkable and identifies local taxi and bus providers. Its FAQ states that there is no ordinary public transport apart from the airport shuttle. Svalbard Buss og Taxi can provide wheelchair-adapted vehicles on request.

For an excursion outside the settlement, use an organised trip with a competent guide who handles polar-bear protection. A road, sign or visible cabin beyond town is not an invitation to explore independently.

Things to Do

Town visit: Svalbard Museum covers the archipelago's cultural and natural history. Leave the rest of the call flexible for the centre. This makes a workable alternative when there is too little time for a separate wilderness excursion.

Longer call: choose one organised activity and match its departure and return points against the berth plan. Treat any time promised in town afterwards as dependent on the excursion returning as arranged.

Getting back to your ship

We haven't written separate return advice for this port yet. The arrival section and getting around cover the routes back.

Practical Information

  • Money: Norwegian kroner (NOK). Visit Svalbard says Longyearbyen's shops prefer cards; arrange any cash needs before travelling.
  • Visitor fee: the Governor states that a NOK 150 environmental fee is added to airline and cruise tickets, checked 2026-09-07 and subject to change. This is separate from locally booked activities.
  • Safety: remain within the settlement unless joining an appropriately equipped guided trip. Tell the ship promptly about any problem affecting your return.
