Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: Hopen has no town centre; the landing reference is the Zodiac landing at Hopen Radio beside the meteorological station.

  • Step-free: no; this is a Zodiac shore landing rather than an alongside quay.

Hopen's own protection regulation excludes a small land area around the station from the reserve, while protecting the rest of the island and the adjacent territorial waters. Ships calling in those protected waters may carry no more than 200 passengers, checked 2026-09-07. The station's land exclusion does not remove that marine restriction.

Oceanwide's voyage report records Zodiac landings at Koefoedodden and Hopen Radio on 5 July 2024. This is direct evidence of expedition use and small-boat access, but the locations and station arrangements belong to that visit. The ship's daily programme sets the intended landing, boarding assistance and return procedure. A station visit needs a specific arrangement.

About this port

Hopen has a working meteorological station operated by the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. The surrounding nature reserve protects seabird habitat and areas used by polar bears. Expedition passengers have visited the island, but a station on an itinerary should not be read as a visitor centre with general public access.

Getting Around

During a shore visit, follow the expedition team and the station's instructions. The reserve requires visitors to avoid disturbance and lasting damage to terrain and heritage. A building, cabin or track does not establish public access.

Things to Do

Observation of the island and discussion of its meteorological role can provide context during a shipboard visit. Seabirds and polar bears are among the reasons for protection, not promised sightings. Enter the station only as part of an arranged visit.

Getting back to your ship

We haven't written separate return advice for this port yet. The arrival section and getting around cover the routes back.

Practical Information

Use the ship as your base for facilities and supplies. Follow the expedition briefing's clothing and boarding requirements for small-boat activity. Hopen's regulation prohibits recreational drones and other unmanned devices in the reserve.
