Bear Island is an expedition stop with possible Zodiac transfers or boat viewing. Oceanwide's published itinerary identifies Kvalrossbukta and Rendalen as possible landing locations, while its visitor guidance makes clear that conditions may prevent any landing. The ship's daily programme gives the actual site, transfer and return arrangements.
The current Bjørnøya regulation limits ships calling in the reserve's marine area to 200 passengers aboard. The limit concerns the vessel, not the number sent ashore at once. Regulation checked 2026-09-07.
There are additional seasonal restrictions in mapped zones. Around the major bird colonies, access on land and at sea is restricted from 1 April to 31 August. The regulation makes an exception at sea for boats up to 40 feet, with a maximum of 5 knots within 500 metres of land. That exception permits qualifying boat traffic, not a shore landing. A separate north-eastern zone closes to access on land and freshwater from 15 June to 31 August. Reserve regulation, sections 8b–9
If a landing is cancelled, the ship may offer coastal viewing or a Zodiac outing when conditions permit.
About this port
Bjørnøya lies in the Barents Sea between the Norwegian mainland and Spitsbergen. The landowner's official account describes a low northern part and high cliffs in the south, with the meteorological station as the island's only settlement. For cruise planning, the reserve's access restrictions matter more than a list of possible wildlife sightings.
Getting Around
If a landing is arranged, follow the expedition leader's site boundaries and return plan. Proximity to the weather station does not imply permission to enter it or use its facilities.
Things to Do
For a confirmed viewing visit, observation of the coastline and seabirds is the relevant activity. The presence of breeding colonies does not justify a close approach or guarantee any particular species. The ship's team must select a lawful route consistent with the seasonal zones.
Getting back to your ship
If a landing is arranged, follow the expedition leader's site boundaries and return plan. Proximity to the weather station does not imply permission to enter it or use its facilities.
Practical Information
Use the ship for supplies and facilities and follow the clothing and boat-boarding requirements in the expedition briefing. Recreational drones are prohibited in the reserve. Do not plan an independent alternative landing if the ship's intended stop cannot proceed.
Frequently asked
Can you walk into a town from Bear Island's cruise landing? No. Bjørnøya has no town; a guided landing stays within the expedition team's site boundaries.
How do cruise passengers land on Bear Island? By Zodiac. Herwighamna is the principal recorded landing area, while Kvalrossbukta and Rendalen can appear in expedition plans.
Do cruise ships dock or tender at Bear Island? They tender. A 2024 voyage report records Zodiac operations and a weather-station visit arranged with permission.
What can passengers see on Bear Island? The coastline, seabird habitat and, when specifically arranged, the area around the meteorological station are the relevant features of a short expedition visit.
