Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: Ayerfjorden has no settlement centre; the relevant shore destination is the mapped Buchananhalvøya landing area, while Kloa/Ayerfjorden is designated for water activities only.

  • Walk: guided hiking on Buchananhalvøya is realistic when the expedition team opens the landing; deep or inconsistent snow can replace the hike with a Zodiac cruise.

Prepare for expedition small-boat activity. Oceanwide's report from 7 June 2024 documents a Zodiac outing in Ayerfjorden. The ship's daily briefing distinguishes remaining aboard, taking a boat excursion and going ashore, and supplies the boarding and return arrangements.

There is now specific evidence linking the fjord name to a landing area. AECO's operations manual, updated 26 February 2026, marks Buchananhalvøya – Ayerfjorden/Raudfjorden as a landing site, while the separately labelled Kloa/Ayerfjorden is marked for water activities only. The legal Appendix 6 map defines the permitted shoreline on Buchananhalvøya. These locations must not be treated as interchangeable. Rules and maps checked on 2026-09-08.

About this port

Ayerfjorden is the western branch of Raudfjorden identified in the Norwegian Polar Institute's place-name register; its description places Chauveaubreen at the head of the branch. Cruise operators use Ayerfjorden as a destination name, but the day's activity may be a boat excursion or a separate guided landing on Buchananhalvøya.

Getting Around

Use the expedition leader's site briefing for a permitted landing. Terrain, group ability and the actual landing determine the route. The general fjord name does not give permission to choose a beach or walk around the peninsula independently.

Things to Do

A confirmed viewing visit would centre on the fjord and the glacier at its head. A glacier name on the itinerary does not mean that a glacier walk or a close approach is included. The Governor warns that falling glacier ice can generate dangerous waves; the expedition leader determines the viewing distance and activity.

Keep this portion of a cruise flexible until the intended site is clear. Leave wildlife expectations open and use the guide's interpretation of the fjord and its glaciers during the activity that can proceed.

Getting back to your ship

We haven't written separate return advice for this port yet. The arrival section and getting around cover the routes back.

Practical Information

The ship's activity description distinguishes remaining aboard, a boat excursion and a landing, as each requires different preparation. The national park regulation limits vessels in its marine area to 200 passengers, checked 2026-09-08; taking fewer people ashore does not exempt a larger ship.

Frequently asked

Do cruise ships dock or tender in Ayerfjorden? They tender. Documented visits use Zodiacs for water activity and for the Buchananhalvøya landing.

Can you walk independently at Ayerfjorden? No. A guided hike is possible only at the mapped Buchananhalvøya landing area; Kloa/Ayerfjorden is marked for water activities only.

Is there a town centre in Ayerfjorden? No. The visit centres on the fjord, glacier views, Zodiac activity and, when conditions permit, a guided Buchananhalvøya hike.

How many passengers may a ship carry in Ayerfjorden's national park waters? Up to 200 passengers. Taking a smaller group ashore does not exempt a larger vessel from the limit.
