Gravneset is specifically included in the current tourist-landing maps. Access from a ship uses small boats and a beach landing: the Norwegian Polar Institute identifies the sandy eastern part of the headland as a landing approach. Your expedition team selects the actual approach and decides whether conditions are suitable. Gravneset site description

The national park's 200-passenger vessel limit applies in its marine area, including a scenic visit without landing. Larger ships do not qualify simply by keeping passengers aboard. Guided tourist access ashore follows the mapped area under section 5a; rules checked on 2026-09-07.

About this port

A visit to Magdalenefjorden can include the whaling heritage at Gravneset, where the burial ground and blubber ovens are protected behind barriers. The fjord is in Nordvest-Spitsbergen National Park. Plan around the expedition leader's landing decision and the permitted walking area, rather than expecting unrestricted access to the headland.

Getting Around

Stay with the guide and outside the fenced cemetery and oven areas. The historic remains are viewed from their permitted margins. Do not assume that a worn track authorises access: the site guidance also identifies vulnerable vegetation that must be avoided.

The small-boat transfer finishes on sand, so this is not a step-free landing. Ashore, the route uses beach, cleared path and natural ground.

Things to Do

If ashore: use the visit to understand the relationship between the former English whaling station and the cemetery, which remained in use after whaling operations at the station ended. The barriers protect both archaeological remains and the surrounding ground.

If remaining aboard: make the fjord scenery the activity. Do not treat glacier-front viewing as an opportunity to approach falling ice; the Governor's safety guidance warns of waves generated by glacier collapse. Any separate small-boat outing remains the expedition team's decision.

Getting back to your ship

Use the ship's facilities before the excursion and carry the clothing and footwear specified in its briefing. Keep the return instructions with you. Do not touch, collect or reposition historical objects, and respect any further closures imposed at the site.
