Cruise ships normally dock alongside in Stockholm, mainly at Stadsgården and Frihamnen.
- Stadsgården/Masthamnen: Ports of Stockholm lists cruise berths 160 and 167 here. They sit at different points along the waterfront. Use your berth's map to find the passenger exit.
- Frihamnen: the port lists cruise berth 638. Plan your onward journey from here, rather than from Stadsgården or the Old Town.
- Skeppsbron and Strömmen: the port also lists cruise berths at Skeppsbron. Strömmen moorings can mean a tender landing; for a call here, follow your ship's final landing instructions.
- Nynäshamn: this is a separate port. Use the Nynäshamn guide and allow for travel between towns; Stockholm's waterfront walking advice doesn't apply here.
The port's published conditions allow berth changes. Keep your final passenger instructions, even if you've already planned around an earlier itinerary.
About this port
For a first visit with limited time, you can explore Gamla Stan or spend longer at a museum on Djurgården. To do both, allow for the transfer from your own terminal and the return.
Your berth shapes the day. Stadsgården and Frihamnen give you different starting points, and a call labelled Stockholm may use Nynäshamn instead. Check the full port and berth name before you choose transport or book a timed museum visit.
Getting Around
SL runs Stockholm's public transport. Its ferry 82 links Slussen, Skeppsholmen and Djurgården, which is useful if you're combining the Gamla Stan area with Djurgården. Check the departure quay and timetable before relying on a connection.
Ferry 80 serves Frihamnen and Nybroplan, with other waterside stops along the way. You can use SL tickets on these commuter ferries. Don't assume a sightseeing boat or attraction pass includes the same transport.
Things to Do
Gamla Stan: make the medieval streets and squares your main outing if you'd like a walk with room to stop when you like. The Royal Palace is in this district, but if you want to go inside, you'll need to plan around opening times and admission arrangements. Wear comfortable shoes for the cobbled streets.
Vasa Museum: if the preserved warship interests you, make this your main indoor visit. Vasa sank in 1628 and was raised in 1961; the displays help you make sense of what you're seeing. The museum is on Djurgården, so allow transport time as part of your visit, especially if you're coming from Frihamnen.
For a short call, one of these plans is enough. Leave yourself time to return comfortably to the correct berth, rather than following a museum visit with a rush across the city.
Getting back to your ship
Getting back: save your berth number and the ship's designated pick-up or walking exit. Check museum admission and the transport timetable separately for your visit date; neither a general city guide nor a visitor pass confirms your return arrangements.
Practical Information
Currency: Swedish krona (SEK). Carry a payment card. Call 112 in an emergency.
Getting back: save your berth number and the ship's designated pick-up or walking exit. Check museum admission and the transport timetable separately for your visit date; neither a general city guide nor a visitor pass confirms your return arrangements.
