Overview

Torbay covers the Devon coastal communities around Tor Bay, including Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. The harbour authority manages the bay and its three enclosed harbours. Use the Torquay guide for cruise arrival details and a visit based around that harbour.

An itinerary calling at Torbay should not be read as a promise of a large ship berth. The authority's cruise information describes anchorage off Torquay and a tender pier. Check the landing named by your cruise line before arranging a meeting or excursion. The enclosed harbours' yacht and fishing facilities do not establish interchangeable cruise landing points.

The area forms the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark, recognised for its geological heritage. This is a different UNESCO programme from the World Heritage List. Coastal scenery, caves and the towns' maritime history can all feature in a short visit, but choose one town or principal attraction rather than trying to circle the whole bay.

Ports in This Region

  • Torquay: on the northern side of the bay, this is the cruise tender destination described by the harbour authority. The harbour adjoins the town centre, with the seafront, Torre Abbey and Kents Cavern offering different ways to spend a visit.
  • Brixham: its working harbour and maritime setting make it an alternative outing around the southern side of the bay. Confirm transport and the return to your ship's actual landing before travelling there.
  • Paignton: the central part of the bay offers a traditional seaside setting and its own smaller harbour. Visit it as an outing from your confirmed cruise landing, allowing time for the return across the bay.

Stagecoach route 12 connects the three towns. Check the operator for current journeys and fares, and allow for traffic when returning across the bay. Treat any additional boat trip as a separate weather-dependent service.

Currency is pounds sterling (£), English is spoken, and the emergency numbers are 999 and 112. Check attraction opening details individually and carry the ship's return instructions.
