Orientation, not a walking route

Ships normally berth alongside. The operator describes six operational berths capable of receiving large cruise ships. Its listed anchorage capability does not mean passengers should expect tendering.
Follow your ship's disembarkation route through the terminal and note the return entrance. Passengers needing wheelchair assistance should arrange this with their shipboard team; a central port location does not establish that every attraction is step-free.
About this port
Nassau suits an independent day because the cruise port opens into downtown, rather than an outlying industrial district. You can choose a town walk with Bahamian art and history, or arrange transport to Paradise Island. Make that choice before joining a taxi queue: an outing close to the ship can be worthwhile without an island tour.
The main planning distinction is between the port exit and your actual gangway. Nassau accommodates large ships along several piers, so being back in the shopping area does not mean you are back aboard.
Getting Around
Walking keeps a downtown visit flexible. Use the waterfront and central streets as a compact sightseeing area, then decide whether to continue inland or take transport further afield.
The port lists public buses, known as jitneys, alongside taxis and ferries. For a time-limited visit, a taxi is the simpler way to reach a chosen destination without adding a bus connection. Agree the destination and return arrangement before leaving. If using a Paradise Island ferry, establish its return departure point and timing before buying a ticket; the outward crossing alone does not complete the plan.
The port's attraction guide estimates a 15-minute walk to the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas and a 30-minute walk to the Fish Fry at Arawak Cay, checked 2026-09-25. Treat these as port-area estimates, excluding the walk along your ship's pier and sightseeing stops.
Things to Do
A compact town outing: start with the Straw Market, then choose the National Art Gallery for Bahamian work or the Queen's Staircase for a visit to the Fort Fincastle historic area. The limestone-cut staircase involves a climb; it is a different outing from a gallery visit. Check the attraction's own opening information when fixing the route.
Food and a longer walk: make Arawak Cay your main destination rather than attaching it to a rushed cross-island trip. Walk out while you have energy, eat without a tight appointment afterwards, and keep a taxi return as an option.
Stay close to the ship: the Bahamas Museum of Junkanoo is within Nassau Cruise Port. Its displays focus on the costumes, music and craft of Junkanoo. Pair it with the port's Bahamian marketplace for a shorter outing instead of treating the terminal solely as a corridor to somewhere else.
These are alternative plans, not a checklist to complete in a single call.
Getting back to your ship
Return to Nassau Cruise Port at Prince George Wharf, then follow the signs for your ship's pier. Leave time after reaching the terminal for security and the remaining walk to the gangway.
From Paradise Island, choose the return crossing or taxi departure while there is still room to change transport. From Arawak Cay, decide whether to walk back before starting another meal or shopping stop. Use the ship's stated all-aboard time, and carry the identification and boarding credential it instructs you to take ashore.
Practical Information
The port confirms that US dollars are accepted at parity with Bahamian dollars. Before paying, identify the currency on any quoted price and keep enough available for the return journey.
Carry water and choose breaks as part of the route, especially if combining an inland climb with a waterfront walk. Do not use the short distance to downtown as a measure of how much walking a whole day requires.
