Arrival & Getting Ashore
Getting to the centre: Grenfell Docking Facility to the Grenfell Interpretation Centre.
- Walk: practical for this first stop: the cruise drop-off is directly behind the interpretation centre, beside Grenfell Park's waterfront walkways. This assessment applies to that landing only. Source: Grenfell Historic Properties.
- Public transport: for sightseeing beyond this walk, SABRI operates a hop-on hop-off service on cruise days; its ordinary weekday route plan excludes those days. Arrange the boarding point with SABRI. Source: operator.

Plan for a tender transfer. Holland America's tender-port list includes St Anthony, and Cruise Newfoundland & Labrador identifies a floating tender dock. The harbour also has an alongside wharf suitable for smaller vessels, but that does not mean your ship will berth there. The Grenfell Historic Society identifies its dock behind the interpretation centre as a cruise-passenger drop-off. Use the landing named in your ship's briefing when arranging a collection, especially if an alternative is assigned.
Tender boarding and the move from boat to floating dock are the first accessibility questions to settle with the cruise line. Describe your mobility aid and assistance needs before booking an independent outing. A town bus advertised as accessible does not establish whether you can make the ship-to-shore transfer.
About this port
St Anthony sits near the northern end of Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula. A day here can follow two quite different themes: the medical and community history associated with Wilfred Grenfell, with coastal walks nearby, or a road excursion to the Norse settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows. Decide which matters most before choosing transport; the archaeological site is a separate outing, rather than something to add to a waterfront stroll.
Holland America includes St Anthony on its ocean-cruise itineraries. This guide concerns the town's harbour call; a voyage landing directly at L'Anse aux Meadows has different shore arrangements.
Getting Around
SABRI operates local transport and advertises a hop-on hop-off service on cruise days, as well as charters, tours and e-bike hire. Its regular route plan explicitly excludes cruise-ship days. Use the cruise-day service information when planning sightseeing, rather than assuming an ordinary weekday bus will follow its usual route. The town's August 2026 update gives SABRI's booking number as 709-454-3484.
The regional cruise authority also lists taxis and car hire. Arrange a vehicle and return collection ahead of an out-of-town trip. For L'Anse aux Meadows, a ship excursion or pre-arranged tour gives you a defined return plan; the limited regular regional bus service should not be treated as a cruise transfer.
Things to Do
Grenfell Historic Properties: Start with the interpretation centre for the story of the doctor and the communities his work served, then consider Grenfell House. The Tea House Trail behind the house adds viewpoints and a memorial. The town rates this walk moderate because of its uphill sections and suggests approximately 90 minutes for the trail itself, separate from museum time.
Fishing Point: Choose this for the lighthouse, open coastal views and walking trails. The climb to Fishing Point Head involves 543 stairs, according to the town, so choose it deliberately rather than expecting a gentle promenade. Whales and icebergs are seasonal possibilities, not a condition of enjoying the landscape.
L'Anse aux Meadows: Parks Canada's site combines archaeological remains, reconstructed sod buildings and interpretation of Norse life. Its advice is to allow at least three hours on site, before adding the outward and return road journeys. There is a significant autumn limitation: the visitor centre and Viking encampment's published 2026 season runs from 1 June to 2 October, daily 09:00–17:00, checked 2026-10-02. For a later cruise call, plan around the published closure unless Parks Canada confirms a special opening.
Getting back to your ship
Your deadline ashore is the ship's last tender, which can precede its advertised sailing time. Agree a return to the Grenfell Docking Facility, or the alternative landing assigned by your ship, with your driver, and allow for both the road journey and waiting to board a boat. Keep the final part of a town visit near the landing instead of starting the Fishing Point stair climb late. Follow any revised tender instructions issued by the crew.
Practical Information
Take a windproof waterproof layer and shoes suitable for steps and trails. Keep water and any essential medication with you during the tender trip and excursions. At Fishing Point, the town lists wheelchair-accessible washrooms at the Emporium; these are an attraction facility, separate from the landing's accessibility.
For a local food stop, look for Newfoundland dishes such as pan-fried cod or berry desserts. Build the meal into a town-based day rather than relying on spare time after the longer archaeological excursion.
