Arrival & Getting Ashore
Getting to the centre: Marco Polo Cruise Terminal to AREA 506 on the Uptown waterfront.

Orientation, not a walking route

Ships berth alongside at Marco Polo, Diamond Jubilee or Long Wharf. The port authority identifies each separately. Marco Polo and Diamond Jubilee have purpose-built terminal buildings, lifts and escalators; those facilities should not be read as a guarantee about your particular ship’s gangway.
At Marco Polo, the AREA 506 Waterfront Container Village is immediately adjacent. For Diamond Jubilee passengers, begin at that terminal’s pedestrian exit. For Long Wharf passengers, begin at Long Wharf. The port’s destination profile describes Uptown attractions as within walking distance of the cruise terminals, but the approach differs by berth. The port’s Welcome Crew can help you orientate yourself and choose an outing once ashore.
About this port
Saint John is a Bay of Fundy port in New Brunswick, distinct from St John’s in Newfoundland. Its central district is called Uptown, and a cruise visit can work well as a day of market browsing, waterfront stops and short walks. The alternative is to build the day around the tidal rapids or a longer coastal excursion; decide that before leaving the waterfront rather than trying to fit everything into the afternoon.
Getting Around
Walking keeps an Uptown visit flexible: you can return for lunch aboard or shorten the route if the weather changes. Pick a small group of stops rather than assuming that everything advertised as a Saint John excursion is in the central district.
For the Reversing Falls Rapids, a prearranged driving excursion makes it easier to match sightseeing to the tide. Establish the return pickup as well as the outward ride. Do the same for an independent coastal trip, with your ship’s terminal written into the booking.
Saint John Transit offers another option for journeys within the city. Its standard single cash fare for passengers aged seven and over is C$3, with exact change required (fare table, checked 2026-10-02). Use the city’s journey information for the actual destination; this is a city bus fare, not a terminal shuttle ticket.
Things to Do
Browse the City Market. This is a useful anchor for an Uptown day, with food stalls, local crafts and places to eat under one roof. The market’s current website lists guaranteed vendor hours beginning at 10:00 Monday–Saturday; build your food stop around the traders rather than an early opening of the building itself (checked 2026-10-02). Sunday and holiday visits need a date-specific opening notice.
Stay near the waterfront. AREA 506 combines small retailers, food outlets and public art in converted shipping containers beside Marco Polo. It makes a manageable final stop for a ship at that terminal. Passengers at another berth should still allow for the walk back to their own entrance.
See the Reversing Falls Rapids. The interest here is the struggle between the river and the Bay of Fundy tide, not a waterfall running continuously in reverse. The tourism board stresses timing: the appearance changes with the tide. Choose this for the phenomenon and riverside setting, and use local tide advice when arranging the outing.
Getting back to your ship
Return to the terminal where you disembarked: Long Wharf, Diamond Jubilee and Marco Polo are separate destinations. For an Uptown walk, retrace the agreed pedestrian route. For a tidal or coastal excursion, work backwards from the ship’s all-aboard time and include the drive, pickup and terminal entry. A favourable tide is not a reason to extend an outing beyond your return plan.
Practical Information
Use Canadian dollars when budgeting for purchases and bus fares. Bring layers and a weatherproof outer layer: the port specifically advises layered clothing for its coastal weather and autumn cruise season. Keep your ship’s contact details and terminal name available offline.
Marco Polo and Diamond Jubilee advertise complimentary Wi-Fi. Download onward directions before leaving the terminal instead of relying on that connection elsewhere in town.
