Arrival & Getting Ashore

Cruise ships berth in the harbour. The port's provincial cruise partners identify Piers 10/11 and Piers 17/18 as cruise berthing facilities. Your assigned berth and passenger exit determine the start of the walk; retain the pier number before leaving rather than assuming every ship uses the same gate.

Harbour Drive is part of the cruise arrival area, with space reserved for tour vehicles and passenger transport during calls. Follow the marked passenger route and staff directions through the working waterfront. In town, the municipal visitor information centre at 348 Water Street provides maps and help planning your visit.

A passenger joining a voyage needs the cruise line's check-in address and luggage arrangements. Those instructions take precedence over a sightseeing meeting point or the port authority's office address. If you need help using the gangway, arrange it with the ship before the day's excursions begin.

About this port

St. John's is Newfoundland and Labrador's capital, reached from the Atlantic through the Narrows into its enclosed harbour. This is St. John's, Newfoundland, not Saint John in New Brunswick. Ocean ships call on transatlantic and expedition itineraries, and some voyages begin or end here.

For a few hours ashore, choose between the downtown streets, a substantial visit to The Rooms, and the views from Signal Hill. Combining a cultural visit with time by the harbour is easier to control than turning a short call into a demanding coastal hike. The hills matter when deciding how much to do on foot.

Getting Around

Plan the town portion around Water Street, then decide whether to add an uphill attraction by vehicle. A pre-arranged taxi or excursion can make Signal Hill a viewpoint visit without committing you to the coastal hiking trail. Agree where the driver will collect you for the return.

For a longer independent journey, Metrobus route 10 connects the downtown Water Street Convention Centre stop with Memorial University and Avalon Mall. Its two directions follow different central streets: city-bound buses serve Harbour Drive, while outbound buses leave the Convention Centre stop via Queens Road, Gower Street and Longs Hill. Use the current route map and timetable to select the correct stop.

The adult Metrobus single fare is C$2.50, checked 2026-10-02. Bring exact cash; bank cards are not accepted on board. This is a city bus option after reaching its stop, not a guaranteed pickup beside your ship. The Rooms lists routes 2, 10 and 15 for access, but the walk from the relevant stop still needs to fit your mobility and timetable.

Things to Do

Downtown and the harbour. Keep an independent visit close to the waterfront for shops, a meal and the city's colourful streets. Start at the Water Street visitor centre if you want a route matched to your available time. This option lets you shorten the day without waiting for an excursion vehicle.

The Rooms. At 9 Bonaventure Avenue, the museum, gallery and archives explore Newfoundland and Labrador through art, archaeology, objects and stories of its people. It is a good main destination for an indoor visit, rather than a quick stop between distant sights. The visitor information page gives current opening arrangements and transport options.

Signal Hill. The national historic site combines harbour views, military history and Cabot Tower. Reaching the summit by road is a different undertaking from walking the North Head Trail. Parks Canada grades that trail difficult: it is 1.7 km one way, with an indicative one-hour hiking time between the summit area and Outer Battery Road. Narrow sections, steep drops and substantial climbing make it unsuitable as a casual shortcut. Those figures exclude travel between the trail and your berth.

Getting back to your ship

Return to the assigned pier entrance, not just to the general harbour frontage. The city restricts Harbour Drive parking during cruise visits, so agree a permitted collection point with a private driver. If hiking, leave time after the trail for the city-to-port journey; if using Metrobus, include waiting time and the different return routing. Keep ship time and all-aboard time as your reference, especially on a voyage that changes time zones.

Practical Information

The bus fare above is in Canadian dollars. Carry water and shoes with grip if walking at Signal Hill, and adapt the plan to conditions on its exposed sections. The Rooms has free Wi-Fi and a water-filling station on Level 2. The municipal visitor centre lists weekday opening from 9 am to 4.30 pm for 28 September–9 October 2026, checked 2026-10-02; later calls should use its current seasonal information.
