Arrival & Getting Ashore
Expect a tender or Zodiac transfer controlled by your ship: Seabourn’s tender-port list explicitly includes L’Anse aux Meadows. Norstead's older local landing information identifies the village's wooden floating dock and describes cruise passengers coming ashore by Zodiac from the anchorage near Round Head. Use the landing location and instructions issued for your particular call; this is not a walk-off cruise terminal.
The expedition team decides when transfers can operate and explains boarding, clothing and meeting arrangements. Ocean operators warn that weather, sea conditions and operational requirements can change their itineraries. Treat the landing as conditional until the crew opens it, and keep any independent plans subordinate to the return-boat arrangements.
About this port
L’Anse aux Meadows is a small coastal landing at the northern end of Newfoundland, with an unusually substantial archaeological visit behind it. The national historic site preserves the remains of a Norse settlement, while reconstructed buildings and interpretation help explain what the low earthworks represent. Nearby Norstead offers a separate, hands-on recreation of a Viking trading village.
Ocean expedition ships call directly here. This guide covers that landing, rather than the coach excursion to the same attractions from St Anthony. Read the port name on your itinerary carefully: the two starting points require different shore arrangements.
Getting Around
Organise the shore visit around the archaeological site, Norstead, or a programme combining them. Norstead places its attraction about 2 km from the national historic site; that is an attraction-to-attraction distance, not a measured route from your tender landing. Establish whether your excursion includes a vehicle transfer or walking before choosing it.
The national historic site admits independent visitors during its operating season. Parks Canada lists 1 June–2 October 2026 for the visitor centre and Viking encampment, checked 2026-10-02 against its opening dates. For cruise passengers, independent time ashore also depends on the ship's landing programme. Obtain the actual return point and permitted time before separating from a group; do not assume that a public attraction operates a shuttle back to your boat.
Things to Do
L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site is the priority for understanding the place. Start with the visitor centre's excavated objects and explanation of the archaeological discovery, then see the settlement remains and reconstructed Norse buildings. Seasonal interpretation includes traditional crafts and stories. Parks Canada recommends at least three hours for the site, trails and programmes together; a shorter ship excursion will necessarily make a selection.
Norstead Viking Village complements that visit with a recreated port of trade. Its boat shed houses the replica vessel Snorri, and its chieftain's hall and workshop provide settings for costumed interpretation. It is a separate attraction, so distinguish its inclusion and admission from the Parks Canada visit when comparing excursions. Norstead publishes a 1 June–19 September 2026 visitor season, checked 2026-10-02; later cruise visits need specifically arranged access rather than an assumption of ordinary opening.
Coastal and bog trails at the national historic site offer an outdoor alternative after the exhibits. Choose a walk that fits the time remaining, stay on the visitor routes and leave archaeological material undisturbed. Save the longer exploration for a call with enough time after interpretation and transfers.
Getting back to your ship
Return to the crew's stated embarkation point by the last-boat time. For a combined visit, include the transfer between attractions and the journey back to the landing when deciding how long to spend at the second stop. Follow any recall or revised departure instructions promptly; an attraction remaining open is not evidence that the ship's landing operation will continue.
Practical Information
Parks Canada's standard daily admission is C$14.75 per adult, checked 2026-10-02. Establish whether your excursion includes entry before buying a separate ticket.
Bring a waterproof outer layer, warm clothing and shoes with grip for the boat transfer and outdoor paths. Carry water and keep your camera or phone protected during the crossing.
Parks Canada lists toilets, picnic facilities and Wi-Fi at the site. It describes the visitor centre, toilets and site as wheelchair accessible, with an all-terrain wheelchair available on request. Those facilities do not establish accessibility of the ship's tender or the route from the harbour. Discuss the complete excursion with the ship before booking, particularly if a Zodiac transfer is involved.
