Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: La Baie's International Cruise Pavilion to the surrounding port village.

  • Walk: practical for the port village once ashore; the official village guide recommends exploring on foot or by bicycle.

The Port of Saguenay identifies Bagotville Wharf as the international-cruise terminal in La Baie. The passenger pavilion is at 900 rue Mars. Alongside arrival is the basis of this guide, but the destination also provides anchorage and tender-pontoon facilities. If your ship assigns a tender operation, follow its landing and return instructions; a berth specification is not a guarantee that your particular vessel will dock.

Proceed through the controlled passenger area to the pavilion. The tourist office is the useful place to collect a village map and settle transport arrangements. Do not direct a driver simply to “Saguenay port”: use the International Cruise Pavilion in La Baie and your ship's meeting instructions.

About this port

An ocean-cruise call at Saguenay brings you into La Baie, beside Baie des Ha! Ha!, rather than into central Chicoutimi. Those names matter when choosing an excursion: Saguenay covers several urban districts, and a tour advertised as visiting the city may involve a substantial transfer from the waterfront where you land. The port village makes an independent short outing; museums and the fjord landscape give you reasons to venture farther when the call allows.

Getting Around

Stay on foot for the port village's shops and waterfront. For a longer local outing, Saguenay Fjord describes a 5 km cycle path exploring Baie des Ha! Ha! and the Musée du Fjord sector, with electric bicycles available near the quay. That is an outing along the bay, not a measured walk to a city centre. Passenger services.

Hop-on hop-off buses connect attractions in La Baie and Chicoutimi on selected days, with tickets sold near the quay. They are sightseeing transport with their own operating arrangements, not an automatic free city shuttle. For a specific destination, pre-arranged tours are another option; the village guide lists taxis on selected cruise days. National has a car-hire counter in the pavilion; reserve ahead if that is central to your plans. Before travelling to Chicoutimi, establish the return pickup and how much time you will actually have there.

Things to Do

For a low-commitment visit, explore the port village's artisan workshops and continue to Parc Mars for bay views. The official village map identifies picnic tables and a playground there. The public market operates on selected cruise days; leave room to enjoy it if open without making it the sole purpose of going ashore.

The Musée du Fjord gives the landscape you sailed through a closer focus. Its aquarium displays marine life, and its multimedia presentations explore the fjord and river. It is a useful alternative to an outdoor excursion in poor weather, but still requires an onward journey from the pavilion. Allow time to enjoy the exhibits rather than fitting it between several distant stops.

For scenery beyond La Baie, consider a properly timed excursion to Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay. Do not confuse the port waterfront with the park's trailheads. Sépaq lists the Sentier de la Statue as a 7.6 km return walk taking about three to four hours from the Le Fjord du Saguenay discovery and service centre in the Baie-Éternité sector; road transfers come in addition. That makes the full hike a substantial undertaking, not a casual addition to town sightseeing. Park visitor guide.

Getting back to your ship

The principal risk is confusing a visit to another Saguenay district with being close to the ship. Return to La Baie's pavilion, building in road travel and any wait for your sightseeing bus. If walking the bay path, remember that the distance must also be covered back. Tender passengers need to meet the ship's last-boat instructions, not merely reach the waterfront by sailing time. Use the all-aboard deadline given on your own vessel.

Practical Information

The pavilion has toilets, free Wi-Fi and an ATM. Save directions and transport contacts before leaving it. Canadian dollars are the useful currency; the tourist office has bilingual advisers. Pack an outer layer for time beside the bay and appropriate footwear if choosing a park excursion. Ask your ship about gangway or tender assistance separately from any accessible vehicle booked ashore.
