Ships berth alongside the pier, so normal arrival does not involve a tender. Follow the pedestrian route into the commercial port complex, then the exit signs if going independently into town. Shops and restaurants within the port are an option for staying close to the ship.

An independent excursion meeting point may be outside the compound. Local operator Caribe Adventures directs its guests through the shopping village and security gate to Paseo del Puerto. Use your own operator's instructions: “meet at the port” is not precise enough to identify a vehicle. Operator exit directions.

About this port

Costa Maya is the cruise port beside Mahahual on Mexico's Caribbean coast. Puerto Costa Maya is another name for the same port, while Mahahual is the neighbouring beachfront town. The distinction matters: stepping into the port's shopping and leisure complex is not the same as reaching the town's malecón.

For a relaxed independent visit, make Mahahual your main destination. Chacchoben offers a different day, centred on Maya archaeology and a road excursion inland. Trying to combine several distant sights can leave little time to enjoy any of them.

Getting Around

Separate the walk off the pier from onward transport. The taxi journey starts after you have reached its pickup area; it does not measure the whole time from your cabin to the beach. Agree the destination, currency and whether a quote covers each passenger or the vehicle before setting off.

In Mahahual, choose a named restaurant or beach club as your meeting point for the return. A distant coastal property may require a different arrangement from a central malecón stop. For inland excursions, book the outward and return journeys together and give the operator your ship's all-aboard time.

Things to Do

Mahahual's beachfront. The malecón and beach restaurants suit a day built around lunch, the sea and an unhurried wander. Establish what a beach-club package includes before paying: transport, seating, food and activities can be separate decisions. Seaweed can affect the shoreline; Royal Caribbean describes an ongoing local sargassum-management programme. Port owner's destination information.

Chacchoben archaeological site. Restored temples and ceremonial buildings make this the stronger choice for history. INAH's visitor page lists foreign admission at MXN 155, checked 2026-10-02; transport, guiding and any additional third-party charges are separate. Arrange your visiting time with the site or excursion operator because INAH's own pages currently give different closing times. INAH visitor information.

Bacalar Lagoon. Royal Caribbean also offers excursions to the lagoon. Treat this as the day's principal road outing, particularly if it includes a boat trip. Compare the actual excursion duration with your call before choosing it over the nearer beachfront.

Getting back to your ship

Return to the cruise-port entrance, then allow time for security, the commercial area and the remaining pier walk. A taxi dropping you at the gate has not delivered you to the gangway. Inland outings add road travel and, for lagoon trips, a boat connection; organise them around the ship's deadline rather than an attraction's closing time. Follow ship time when arranging a pickup.

Practical Information

Bring sun protection for the pier and water for any outing. For Chacchoben, wear comfortable walking shoes and carry insect repellent; a ruins visit is a different undertaking from sitting beside the sea. Keep your ship card and the identification requested by your cruise line ready for re-entry.

Save the name and location of your pickup point offline. If travelling as a group, settle the total return transport arrangement before splitting up along the beach.
