Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: SSA cruise terminal to the designated shuttle stop in central Progreso.

  • Walk: unsuitable as a town approach: the terminal is offshore at the end of the long port connection. Use the passenger transport service. SSA terminal location.
  • Shuttle: free terminal-to-town service. A local excursion operator confirms collection at the free shuttle terminal ashore; the official town map marks stops at the handicrafts market and bus terminal. Establish which stop serves your sailing. Operator collection instructions, official town map, checked 2026-10-02.
  • Taxi: terminal taxis are listed by SSA; arrange the complete journey and return collection before leaving. Terminal services.

Ships berth alongside. SSA places the port facility 6.5 km from the coast; this is a location description, not a measured walking distance to a particular square. The passenger area includes shops, restaurants and transport services. If joining an excursion, follow its meeting instructions before boarding the town shuttle: some tours collect passengers at the cruise terminal, while others meet ashore in town.

About this port

Progreso is the Gulf-coast cruise gateway to Yucatan, often listed on itineraries as Yucatan (Progreso). The town offers a beach and waterfront restaurants; Mérida and archaeological sites require a separate inland journey. Choose between these before going ashore, because the long pier adds a transport stage even to a simple beach day.

The cruise facility is operated by SSA Marine México. It is the same port behind the Yucatan itinerary label, not a second terminal in Mérida.

Getting Around

Once the shuttle has reached town, the waterfront and central streets suit a local outing. Save the exact return stop, take a photograph of its signs and note the operating times given that day. The free transfer serves Progreso; it is not transport to Mérida or the archaeological sites.

For an inland trip, use an excursion or arrange a driver with a definite collection point and return time. Be clear whether you are booking transport alone or a guided visit with several stops: these need different time allowances.

Things to Do

Progreso beach and Malecón. This is the simplest plan to shorten if you want an early return. The tourism board identifies both the traditional and international waterfront promenades, public beach areas and seafood restaurants. Before taking a lounger or table, establish any charge or minimum spend. Follow beach flags and local instructions on the day.

Mérida. Choose the state capital if architecture and city life appeal more than a beach visit. Plaza Grande anchors its historic centre. Make that a clear drop-off request and arrange where the driver will collect you; a broad instruction to meet somewhere in the centre is less useful when time is limited. Yucatan tourism: Mérida.

Uxmal. The archaeological option needs most of a cruise day. Disney advertises its combined Uxmal and Chocostory excursion at 6.5–7 hours, checked 2026-10-02. That is the duration of that particular organised tour, not a transfer estimate or a guarantee it fits every call. Use your sailing's excursion programme to judge feasibility and avoid adding Mérida independently afterwards. Disney excursion details.

Getting back to your ship

The return has two parts: reach your town shuttle stop, then travel along the port connection and through the terminal. Plan for the queue as well as the drive. From Mérida or Uxmal, tell the driver whether your agreed endpoint is the ship's authorised terminal access or a town transfer stop. Use the ship's all-aboard time when setting that arrangement.

Practical Information

Bring pesos for small purchases, water and sun protection. For ruins, choose walking shoes rather than beach sandals. Keep the ship card and requested identification ready for the terminal security checks.

For a passenger using a wheelchair or mobility aid, arrange the whole transport chain with the cruise line, including the terminal-to-town vehicle. An accessible beach facility in Progreso does not establish accessibility from the ship to that beach.
