Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: Passenger-terminal exit, after the berth transfer, to Plazuela Machado.

  • Walk: a practical option along the painted Blue Line to the historic centre and Plazuela Machado. This assessment begins outside the terminal, not beside the ship. Tourist Aide Volunteers.

Princess explicitly describes alongside arrival at the Mazatlan Cruise Terminal. Follow the port staff's route to the tram and terminal instead of treating the cargo apron as a pedestrian exit. The terminal has local vendors and transport options; decide on your onward plan here before leaving the controlled area.

About this port

Mazatlan gives you a choice between a historic city day and the resort coast. Plazuela Machado, the cathedral and the market make a compact sightseeing circuit once you reach the old town. The Zona Dorada is a separate destination, so name the neighbourhood when arranging a ride rather than asking vaguely for the beach.

Ocean cruise ships dock inside a working commercial harbour. The useful starting point for independent exploration is the passenger terminal after the internal transfer, not the ship's gangway.

Getting Around

The Blue Line provides a useful route into the old town and now continues to Mercado Pino Suárez. The volunteers who help visitors wear blue shirts carrying the Mazatlán Tourist Aide Volunteer logo. Their downloadable map is worth saving before going ashore, particularly if you plan to leave the marked route for the waterfront.

For the Zona Dorada or a sightseeing circuit, take a taxi or pulmonía. Be clear whether you want a direct transfer or a tour with waiting time: those are different arrangements. Keep the terminal's location on your phone so that your return destination is unambiguous.

Things to Do

Old town and market. Use Plazuela Machado as your first stop, with the Ángela Peralta theatre beside it. Continue to the cathedral and Mercado Pino Suárez for a visit that mixes architecture, everyday shopping and places to eat. Leave room to pause rather than trying to cover every street.

Olas Altas and the waterfront. Add this seafront area to an old-town outing if you prefer sea views to another indoor stop. It gives the day a different feel without committing to a resort visit further along the coast. Choose a turning point before lunch so that the return does not become an afterthought.

El Faro. The lighthouse stands on Cerro del Crestón. The destination tourism guide estimates approximately 30–40 minutes for the ascent, checked 2026-10-02; that excludes travel from the terminal and the descent. Treat this as a separate uphill activity, with water and suitable shoes, rather than a quick addition to a long town walk. El Faro visitor information.

Getting back to your ship

Return to the passenger terminal first, then follow the internal transfer instructions for your berth. Reaching the port entrance is not the same as reaching the gangway. A taxi from the Zona Dorada adds a road journey, while the lighthouse adds a descent before transport. Set your turnaround using the ship's all-aboard time and allow for terminal checks and the tram queue.

Practical Information

Carry Mexican pesos for small purchases and agree transport prices in a stated currency. Take sun protection and drinking water, and keep the ship card and required identification accessible. Walking into town and climbing the lighthouse are different levels of exertion; choose accordingly.

For trips beyond the city, consult the current FCDO regional advice. As checked on 2026-10-02, Mazatlan is an exception to its restriction covering most of Sinaloa; that exception should not be extended to an unspecified rural excursion.
