Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: Puerto Pichilingue cruise berth to La Paz's central malecón.

  • Walk: not a practical cruise-day approach. Princess places downtown roughly 10–15 miles from the dock; use a vehicle for this connection.

Ships normally berth alongside at Pichilingue. Follow the port's passenger arrangements from your gangway to the transfer area. The cruise-line service described here is the onward town transfer; do not mistake any movement within the port for delivery to central La Paz.

Princess's Highlights of La Paz excursion gives about 25 minutes' driving from Pichilingue into La Paz and 25 minutes back from the malecón to the pier. These are estimates for that tour; allow extra for waiting and boarding, and use your own transfer's timings.

Before leaving a town transfer, photograph or save its pickup point and record the last return advised for your call. Different cruise arrangements need not use the same stop.

About this port

La Paz offers a waterfront promenade, regional culture and access to Baja California Sur's beaches. The important arrival detail is that large cruise ships dock at Puerto Pichilingue, outside the city. Your day begins with a transfer; the town's walkable waterfront is what you reach afterwards.

Cruise calls advertised as La Paz use Pichilingue in Princess’s arrival guidance. This guide covers that ocean-cruise call, not a mainland ferry crossing or a departure from one of the city's yacht marinas. Decide whether you want a town visit or a beach outing before choosing transport.

Getting Around

Once on the central malecón, explore the waterfront and nearby streets on foot. The tourism board describes the promenade as 5 km long, with sculptures, rest areas and recreational spaces. That is the length of the waterfront attraction, not the distance from the ship. Choose a section rather than feeling obliged to cover it all. La Paz malecón guide.

For a beach or marine excursion, establish where its transport actually starts. A boat departing from a city marina still requires you to get there from Pichilingue. Ask for the complete pickup and return arrangement when comparing outings, especially if combining a road transfer with a boat.

Things to Do

Malecón and waterfront sculptures. This is the simplest town visit: enjoy the bay, look for the La Paz letters and sculptures, and stop for something to eat. Keep your transfer pickup as the anchor for the day's walk.

Cathedral and regional history. The city tourism guide locates the cathedral on Revolución between 5 de Mayo and Independencia. The Regional Museum of Anthropology and History, on 5 de Mayo and Altamirano, offers another way to understand the region beyond its beaches. The museum's standard admission for foreign visitors is MXN 145 (checked 2026-10-15; subject to change). Choose according to your interests and the opening arrangements on your visit. Balandra. Its shallow bay, mangroves and mushroom-shaped rock make it a distinct nature outing. CONANP lists two entry sessions for this protected area, 08:00–12:00 and 13:00–17:00, each capped at 450 visitors. Digital admission is valid only for the second session (checked 2026-10-15). If you buy online, make sure an afternoon visit and the journey back fit your ship's call. CONANP directs visitors to authorised trails and prohibits climbing the dunes or mushroom rock. Protected-area guidance.

Getting back to your ship

The main vulnerability is the road journey back to Pichilingue. Reaching the malecón pickup point is only the start of that return. Work backwards from your ship's all-aboard time using the transfer instructions for the day; avoid a final city stop after the last advised town departure. On an independent excursion, ensure the driver knows the cruise berth destination and the time used aboard your ship.

Practical Information

Bring water, a hat and sun protection for the waterfront or beach. Pack the identification required by your cruise line and keep the terminal name available for a driver. “La Paz port” can be less useful than “Pichilingue cruise ship” when describing your return destination.

If mobility is limited, resolve both gangway access and vehicle boarding before going ashore. A promenade outing may suit you once in town, but that does not establish the suitability of every transfer vehicle or beach excursion.
