Getting into town

Use San Miguel as the town destination and your assigned cruise terminal as the starting point.

  • Punta Langosta: The downtown pier is the convenient starting point for exploring the central waterfront.
  • Puerta Maya or SSA International: Plan onward road transport if San Miguel is your destination, rather than applying downtown walking advice to these southern terminals.

Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: Use San Miguel as the town destination and your assigned cruise terminal as the starting point.

  • Punta Langosta: the downtown pier is the convenient starting point for exploring the central waterfront.
  • Puerta Maya or SSA International: plan onward road transport if San Miguel is your destination, rather than applying downtown walking advice to these southern terminals.

The port authority identifies distinct cruise facilities, and Puerta Maya's official island map shows their different positions. Ships berth alongside; the municipality records large ocean ships using the SSA International cruise terminal. Your cruise line's arrival instructions determine the pier for your own call.

Take a photograph of the terminal name as you leave. Tour pickup instructions may name a meeting point outside the terminal complex rather than beside the gangway. Read that distinction before setting off through the shops.

About this port

Your Cozumel terminal determines how to start the day. Punta Langosta is the downtown option, while Puerta Maya and the International terminal operated by SSA are further south along the island's west coast. A recommendation to walk into town therefore needs a terminal name attached to it.

For an independent visit, choose between San Miguel's waterfront and museum, or an island activity with a return transfer. The passenger ferry to mainland Mexico is a separate journey with additional connections; it is not the transport needed for a day on Cozumel.

Getting Around

Puerta Maya publishes a dedicated taxi and rental-car information page. At the terminal, agree a specific destination, party size, currency and return pickup before accepting transport. A beach visit needs a plan for getting back as well as a ride out.

If your main interest is San Miguel, keep the journey simple: transfer into town from a southern terminal, explore on foot, then return to the same terminal. From Punta Langosta, use the waterfront as an orientation line and avoid adding a vehicle merely because one is being offered.

The mainland passenger ferry uses Terminal Maritima San Miguel on Avenida Rafael Melgar, according to APIQROO. A mainland excursion adds a ferry in both directions and potentially another road journey. Reserve it for a call whose time ashore comfortably accommodates every stage, or choose an organised excursion whose arrangements suit your ship.

Things to Do

San Miguel and the island museum: the Museo de la Isla de Cozumel is at Avenida Rafael E. Melgar 321 in the centre. Its exhibits explain the island's geography, history and natural and cultural heritage. Make it the anchor of a town outing, with a waterfront walk and lunch around it, rather than collecting distant attractions.

A water-focused day: Puerta Maya's destination information describes the island's reefs and marine conservation work. Choose an excursion appropriate to your swimming ability and establish where it starts: transport to a boat departure point may be separate from the activity itself. Follow the operator's reef-protection instructions and select a return time that leaves room for the trip back to your cruise pier.

A shorter outing from Puerta Maya: its own market and dining area provides a nearby alternative when you want to get ashore without committing to an island circuit. It is a terminal visit, not the same experience as San Miguel, so choose it for convenience rather than assuming it is the town centre.

Getting back to your ship

Tell your driver the full terminal name: Punta Langosta, Puerta Maya or SSA International. Showing the terminal photograph is more useful than saying only "the cruise port".

Return from a beach or boat trip with time left for the road transfer, terminal access and pier walk. If visiting the mainland, work backwards from a return ferry you can afford to miss without missing the ship; if the available schedule cannot provide that margin, keep the day on Cozumel. Follow your cruise line's instructions about ship time before leaving.

Practical Information

Save the terminal location offline and keep return transport money separate from your spending budget. When comparing an excursion price, distinguish entrance charges, equipment, food and transport; a headline activity price may not cover the whole outing.

For mobility planning, ask about the actual pier walk and the vehicle used for a booked transfer. A dock arrival does not itself establish an accessible route through every terminal or into a small excursion boat.
