Cruise ships berth alongside in the New Port's cruise docking area. The port authority's current MedCruise profile describes the completed Cruise Terminal T3 and the relocation of cruise docking to the part of the port closest to town, placing it 300 m from the city centre.

The port authority operates a shuttle for transfers within the port, including between ships and terminals. This is an internal port service, separate from a transfer into town. Use the passenger exit and boarding instructions supplied for your berth.

About this port

Igoumenitsa is a working passenger port in Epirus, on Greece's northwestern mainland. A short call lends itself to the town's waterfront and archaeological museum; a longer one opens up the coastal settlements and inland landscapes of Thesprotia. Choose between those two scales before leaving the ship. An ambitious regional excursion can consume most of the available day in transport.

The town is comparatively modern. Its appeal for a cruise passenger is the combination of everyday Greek coastal life and access to the surrounding region, rather than a concentrated ancient quarter beside the harbour.

Getting Around

For a town visit, walking after leaving the passenger area is a reasonable starting plan. If the assigned exit or the heat makes the distance unsuitable, ask the shore staff to arrange a taxi. Agree the destination and payment basis before departure, especially if you want the driver to wait during a museum visit.

For Parga, KTEL Thesprotias' timetable lists buses from Igoumenitsa at 06:15 and 13:30 Monday–Friday, with departures back from Parga at 07:30 and 15:00 on the same days. No weekend trips are shown (checked 15 October 2026). Compare both directions with your ship's return deadline before planning a bus outing.

Parga, Syvota and inland destinations require a separate transport plan. If you're hiring a driver, arrange the return pickup before leaving Igoumenitsa and give the driver your ship's deadline. Avoid building a short call around a ferry trip to another island.

Things to Do

Explore Thesprotia through its museum. The Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa presents the region from prehistory to the Ottoman period, with particular attention to its Hellenistic cities. This gives a town-based visit historical depth without committing to a distant excavation. It's closed on Tuesdays, and standard admission is €10 (checked 15 October 2026). See the museum's opening hours and tickets, or the Ministry of Culture museum entry, for current visiting information.

Leave room for the waterfront. The port association describes cafés, restaurants and shops within walking reach of the cruise area. Combine a waterfront meal with the museum instead of treating lunch as something to squeeze into the final minutes. Choose a convenient turning point so the return remains straightforward.

Choose one coastal excursion. Syvota and Parga are among the destinations promoted by the port association. They suit passengers who want a change of scenery beyond Igoumenitsa. Ask an excursion provider to specify how much time is actually spent ashore at the destination, and whether walking involves slopes or steps. The destination profile outlines the regional choices.

Ioannina and Meteora appear in the port's wider excursion offer. They should be assessed as substantial organised outings, with travel time built into the itinerary; neither belongs in an improvised short town visit.

Getting back to your ship

Parga, Syvota and inland destinations require a separate transport plan. If you're hiring a driver, arrange the return pickup before leaving Igoumenitsa and give the driver your ship's deadline. Avoid building a short call around a ferry trip to another island.
