Heraklion Port Authority identifies cruise berths at Piers II, III and IV–V, with a cruise passenger terminal at IV–V. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs also identifies the cruise terminal at Pier II. Get the assigned pier, authorised exit route and any required boarding assistance from your ship before setting off.

The authority also publishes facilities for its general passenger terminal under its ferry information: these include an information desk, maps, an ATM and taxi services, but no luggage lockers. These facilities are at the general passenger terminal.

About this port

Heraklion offers two distinct ways to explore Minoan Crete: the Archaeological Museum in town and the palace at Knossos outside the centre. For a short call, the museum and a city walk keep the programme contained. Knossos adds road transport and a separate site visit, so choose it deliberately rather than treating it as an automatic extra.

Getting Around

For a city visit, the free Red CityBus serves the waterfront and Eleftherias Square. The municipality's walking map connects the passenger terminal and waterfront with the old harbour and central pedestrian streets, providing an alternative once outside the working port.

For Knossos, Heraklion Urban Bus route 2, Port–Knossos, is the regular public bus. The port-to-Knossos journey crosses into Zone B: an ordinary ticket costs €1.80 one way bought before boarding, or €2.80 one way from the driver. A taxi or arranged excursion removes the need to fit the bus timetable, but still requires an agreed pickup and time for the road journey back.

Things to Do

Keep the visit in town: The Archaeological Museum displays finds from across Crete, including its Minoan collection. Its address is 2 Xanthoudidou and Hatzidaki streets. The municipality's walking guide places the museum beside Eleftherias Square, giving a practical focus for a city visit without needing to follow a long monument circuit.

Make Knossos the main outing: Knossos is one of the six Minoan Palatial Centres inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2025. UNESCO explicitly recognises the substantial twentieth-century reconstructions in its assessment: the visible complex contains both ancient remains and modern reconstruction. Leave time for admission and the return connection before considering an additional museum visit.
