The Municipal Port Fund lists four piers and a maximum vessel length of 230 metres. Both alongside and tender calls occur: Celestyal Journey uses the town port for regular calls, with alongside berthing documented in the municipality's May 2026 report, while Seabourn lists Agios Nikolaos among its tender ports.
For a docked call, follow the designated exit into town. For an anchored call, obtain the landing point and last tender time on board. The inner old harbour is reserved for fishing boats according to the port fund; do not mistake it for a confirmed cruise berth when arranging a pickup.
About this port
For a short call at Agios Nikolaos, keep the day centred on Lake Voulismeni and the adjoining harbour streets. The port is in the town itself. Spinalonga is a separate outing involving another boat journey; choose it only after allowing for the ship's own arrival and return arrangements.
Getting Around
A town visit can be made on foot once ashore. The port fund lists buses, taxis and car hire among local transport options. The municipal tourism office places the main taxi rank beside Lake Voulismeni. For an outing beyond town, arrange the return before leaving.
Spinalonga boats depart from Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and Plaka. Starting from town avoids a road connection; travelling to Elounda or Plaka adds that connection but shortens the sea crossing. Compare the complete return itinerary, including waiting and the island visit, rather than choosing by crossing time alone.
For the road connection to Elounda, KTEL Heraklion–Lasithi runs buses from Agios Nikolaos, including services continuing to Plaka. Its booking timetable gives about 20 minutes aboard the bus to Elounda, checked 8 September 2026. This is an onward trip from town, separate from the cruise-port walk.
Things to Do
- A town-only visit: Use Lake Voulismeni as the focus for a walk, a café stop and the surrounding streets. This leaves flexibility if disembarkation takes longer than expected.
- Spinalonga as the main outing: The island contains Venetian fortifications and buildings associated with its later use as an isolation settlement for people with leprosy, which ended in 1957. Leave optional shopping until after returning to Agios Nikolaos.
