Expect a tender transfer for an Azamara call: the cruise line lists Amorgos among destinations where passengers are brought ashore by small boat. Katapola is a documented cruise harbour in Explora Journeys' own destination announcement and is identified as the main port by the archaeological authority.

Azamara does not name its landing harbour; use your ship's daily programme for the actual landing, return point and last tender time. The Katapola bus directions apply to a landing in that harbour.

About this port

Amorgos rewards a visit planned around one base. Katapola is a harbour settlement; Chora is inland and holds the island's Archaeological Collection. The cliff monastery of Panagia Chozoviotissa is another destination, with different access demands.

Getting Around

The municipality links to Amorgos Bus Company, whose current timetable takes effect from 1 September 2026. The Katapola–Chora service includes buses continuing towards the monastery and Agia Anna; use the current timetable to choose the outward and return departures.

For a walking outing, the South Aegean region lists Fotodotis, route 2, from Xylokeratidi in Katapola Bay to Chora via Pera Rachidi and Milies, as 3.5 km and about one hour without stops. These figures start at the trailhead in Xylokeratidi, across the bay from Katapola's port, and exclude the approach from your tender landing. Chora is uphill; the bus is the simpler option for a short visit.

Choose an outing with arranged transport or stay near the landing if the bus return does not fit your call. For Chora, allow time both to reach the settlement and to walk to the chosen attraction. Avoid treating the monastery as an automatic extra stop.

Things to Do

  • Archaeological Collection in Chora: A focused alternative to an island circuit, with finds from Amorgos. The Ephorate publishes visitor information for the collection.
  • Panagia Chozoviotissa: The monastery occupies a narrow cliff setting. Municipal visitor information confirms that the road approach is followed by steps, and asks men to wear trousers and women long skirts. The linked municipal page gives visiting hours; vehicle access does not remove the stair approach.
  • Katapola: If this is the confirmed landing, a harbour visit keeps the return simple.

Getting back to your ship

Choose an outing with arranged transport or stay near the landing if the bus return does not fit your call. For Chora, allow time both to reach the settlement and to walk to the chosen attraction. Avoid treating the monastery as an automatic extra stop.
